Hiya, Great news Daisy is now road worthy!!!

Bad news is there is a terrrible vibration when driving.
We know it's coming from the drive shaft. We put in new U.J's. What do we do???

Really need help on this one as i want to drive her Friday to Thorney Island otherwise all the effort we've put in will be for nothing and i'll be well pissed off.

Cheers

Take it to a machine shop and have it balanced.

sounds like the driveshaft may need to be balanced. you sure it's not the tires out of balance or even a bent rim?

Hey Daisy,If rear drive yoke does not have tabs U-joint trunions must have snap rings in order to keep shaft centered in yoke, otherwise off center occurs and causes massive vibration.Worst case scenario spits out shaft.Good luck in your quest.

Sorry it's actually the torque tube. as she's a long bed it's got an extension piece on the gear box and at the second ball joint the torque tube is wobbling at the back of the second ball joint. Had 2 new u.j's fitted and roller bearing in the ball joint. We put her up on stands and "drove her" and when we lifted the torque tube the wobble seemed to go.

D,could possibly be related to shaft support bearing also.

Y.b the u,j's seem to be free we can move them up and down freely. Could it be the bushes inside the torque tube?????

Y.B if you mean the bearing behind the ball joint that was a new one. I really appreciate the help.

D. As I recall there is an intermediate driven shaft supported by a bearing, A coupler that the universal joint bolts to with 4 #10 or 1/4" bolts a set of female splines,a rear driven shaft with male splines and a support bearing.In my first post I wasn't aware we were talking about a closed drive vehicle.As I understand it now you have replaced u joint and trunions and a support bearing.Am presently unclear whether front or rear support bearing was replaced.Also unclear why you replaced afformentioned parts to begin with ,but that bit of info might help clarify whats going on.Are you connected on MSN messenger, if you are perhaps we should chat ther instead of using up band width here,besides it's faster.Yo Baby {Damn that was a long one.}

Y.B i can get on Zeke's Hamb chat if that's any help or i'll email.

Hopefully here's a picture from the manual.

I've replaced item 25,7,5 and 9. Last year we had slight vibration but lot's of horrible noises. Bearing 25 was shot so we thought that was the problem but replaced u.j's as matter of course but now more of wobble than vibration. The only thing we haven't changed is item 12 the bushing.

D. sorry I'm late getting back duty called. The shop manual pretty much is as my recall is of assy.I hate to say but it looks like, considering that I can't perform the laying on of hands, disassembly and inspection from t-case to diff. is in order.I know it's no fun buuuuut...there it is.Good luck in your search for the root of the problem.Gotta get back in shop and do a little work.Y.B.

Daisy,

I don't have any experience with this setup, but it sounds as though one of your u-joints isn't seated properly placing the shafts out of centre from one another. This may/may not affect "looseness" of the u-joints & it may/may not be obvious depending on the setup.

Like I said, I've no experience with this setup, so I'm groping in the dark. Replacing item 12 (if you can find one before Friday) may help, but I doubt that it alone would cause that much wobble & if it is the U-joint, it won't help at all...

Sorry I can't be of more help... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Thanks Flat Ernie it's given us an idea would to much rubber where the ball joint mounts to the chassis crossmember cause a problem???

Hey D.I would have to say Flat Ernie has a point.Something else came to me while I was out in the shop making light.I wondered if the truck was up on safety stands when you tried it earlier. If this was in fact the case any imbalance, out of round in vertical plane,or out of true in wheel is amplified for some reason that evades me.If this was the case, you might try putting truck on the ground and going for a spin around the neighborhood and see how it feels.P.S. I dig that purple cog box.later
