View Full Version : OT when is it ok to throw out old magazines?

I am planning a big cross-country move and am trying to lighten the load as much as possible.
Anyway, I made a deal with the wife. If she shitcans a couple boxes of old pictures (of nothing noteworthy, mainly photography experiments), I will whittle down my magazine collection.
So last night I boxed up nearly all of my 80's and 90's era Rod and Custom (except the Ganahl era issues), American Rodder, Street Rodder, and Custom Rodder mags. Put them out at the curb with a heavy heart.
I still have six boxes worth of 50's, 60's, and 70's car mags in their protective plastic covers. But, dammit, I still feel like I dumped a portion of my archives. No matter that I haven't looked at any in ages.
Am I going to hot rod hell for this or is it just growing pains of a reforming pack-rat?

I've had to pare down in the past and my solution was to go through with a razor and take out what was important.
As far as throwing them away...You are going to Hot Rod Hell. Sell them on Ebay or ditch them on the classifieds for postage and handling.
Where are you headed?

Thats the worst. I've had to do that with my divorce, no room for the collection. I couldn't bring myself to do it, I ended up thumbing through a dozen boxes of magazines, got rid of 3 boxes.

hammy, If you are coming down to the Road Agents meet Saturday I'll take the magazines and give you lunch and beer money. If all goes well I'll have my Lyndwood rail out front. I PMd you as well.
Dumb fuck!
Every one you toss you'll be searching for at the swap meets for and paying top dollar for within five years.
I guarantee it!
After all the excess photos, letters and shoes she'll never wear again are gone there'll be pleanty of room to keep all your magazines...
Just lie,,, mark all the magazine boxes "black pumps, last years" and you'll be able to keep every one! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
I just can't figure out why she saves all those worthless Smithsonian and Sierra club magazines..who's going to ever want to read those again? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Just kidding, If I have stuff that's important to keep for whatever reason so does and should she..
I even have stuff stored away for my kid brother because his wife tosses out what "he doesn't need" for him when he's not home.
I have a complete collection of all the different neck ties a TWA flight attendant wore dating all the way back to the early 70s stashed away for him.

..MY rule of thumb is that when the pages are all stuck together, I shitcan them! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have to agree with Stevie G.
Sell em, or give them to a friend but NEVER just throw them away. That's like crushing an old car. Pass them on, don't destroy them.

Don't throw them away! Give them to someone else at least!!!
I do the xacto trick too. I am starting my second 3 ring binder from cutting up new hot rods, car craft and R&C.

I've been married a few times and have dumped my magazines. I still miss my early 50s 60s rod mags.

Does anyone ever? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Simple answer: Never!
I have a moved a few times as well, and I still have all magazines I ever brought. A collection of 3500 magazines during 30 years of buying. Yes, they have a room of their own!

Alright, alright. I just returned from the garage where I subjected myself to a monk-style self lashing with an old nailhead dipstick.
Have I appeased the hot rod gods? Or will I merely go to the third ring of Hot Rod Hell to drive an import with a fart pipe and pick up cross-dressers disguised as ghetto hootchie-mamas?
37Kid, it's a deal. Only one box has been shitcanned. I still have quite a few for ya'. I would feel better with them going to another hamb'er than Wacky Joe the garbageman. Maybe I'll get enough to buy a Rumble t-shirt or one of Django's cool t's and some beer money.
BTW, I'm moving back to Seattle, WA. When we moved out east, I unloaded the U-haul and couldn't believe the quantity of useless shit we paid almost $4,000 plus gas and lodging to truck across the country. Won't make the same mistake.
I did the x-acto thing for a few issues. But soon came to the conclusion that letting my 11-month old play in our '57 Pontiac with me was more worthwhile than weeding through back-halved bullet nose Stude features and tech articles on installing Mazda door handles on aqua-scalloped '37 cabriolets.
Like I said, all my 50's thru 70's issues are safe. That's where my real inspiration and reference material lies. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
man, i'll pay to ship some of them mags here too, put me in line after the other guys! r&c, american rodder etc. i want em! let me know what you got.

Hammy,
Before you throw out ANYTHING car related, put it in the HAMB classifieds. Like you, I'm faced with a move and some posessions that I'd rather not take with me... so I'm blowing 'em out cheap.
Ed
PS- Anyone reading this, I still have a set of 58-61 SBC staggered bolt pattern heads and a set of 40's Chevy truck 16x4 6-lug rims. A Magneto t-shirt or maybe a few back issues would be a good trade! Free delivery to the show!

Never throw out magazines. If you get stuck bringing any of them to to Seattle I'll pick them up.
