what obvious reasons are you going to an Alternator?? Generators work fine for most any car that doesnt have a boom box and a million accessories..I always use the Gennies they are easy and simple

Poncho,
I went to an Alt. when I broke a tab off of my Gen. on my '58 Apache.
I took out the regulator and all the unnecessary wiring. The way I did it was simple. I got a good wiring diagram off the internet. Once I dived into it, the diagram made it clear what wires were unecessary.
You can also get a wiring diagram out of a shop manual.....but wherever you get it, get a diagram.

the generator wires are hooked up into your regulator. Just bypass all the wires, get rid of the regulator, and get a 1 wire alternator with internal regualtor and hook up the one wire to your battery. done deal.

do not get a 1 wire alt. they only tend to charge off idle (and are over priced). get on from a '73 or newer gm, buy the pigtail plug, some 10g wire, fuseble link. if you want to remove the reg you can or just leave it there for looks. here's what i did, find battery wire to reg, put link on it, put wire from link to "bat" pole on back of alt, on the back of alt were reg is it should say "1" and "2". plug in pigtail to reg on alt, "2" goes to ring on back of alt from battery (10g), "1" goes to stock warning light. don't forget to run a ground wire off the alt case. this swap can also be done without the fuseble link, just hook 10g wire to alt and battery wire.

I have had a hell of alot more alternators go out thatn generators over my lifetime.
You just need a good rebuilt generator done by a professional.
