View Full Version : Spreading the word about Craigslist finds?

Just a suggestion....
I try to look at my local Craigslist pretty often for stuff I'm looking for. Many times I'll run across items I don't need but other HAMB members might be interested in.
Rather than starting a thread for every item found, would it be better to have a recurring thread for anyone finding similar items to post them on? Perhaps by state or region (such as Northeast).
At least then someone from the Northeast could check the thread once in a while to see if anybody spotted any good stuff close enough for them to go check it out.
Good idea, bad idea, too much stuff that would get out of date, what do you think?

Currently most links to CL and Ebay get deleted. The problem is that you get some idiots listing their own stuff, sometimes blatantly, sometimes acting like it's not theirs.
Either way it winds up turning the main board into a classified section.

Yeah, I understand that it would get out of hand if there is a seperate topic for everything that gets mentioned. That is why I thought if it were limited to just adding stuff you've seen to an already established thread it might work.
For example, if I started a thread about something I have seen on Craiglist or another classified in my area and I title the thread something like "Craiglist type finds - Northeast"....then others from the Northeast region of the country can check it out and they can add with posts about stuff they've run across in their neck of the woods. Somebody in the Southwest could start a separate thread, then Northwest, Midwest, etc. could start building their own threads.
It would help the entire community to look out for cars and parts appropriate to HAMB type projects. Nobody is going to scour every region of every state the way Craigslist groups the listings....but with help from HAMB members some things might get into the right hands.
Maybe the moderators could delete some of the out of date posts after a while?

I agree. There are a lot of things on CL that most of us never see. Their search engine only searches by city, an impossible task when you're looking for something specific. How about making a seperate area in the classified? It would be for links to CL or even local sites or even Ebay. My local provider has a classified that we find deals on all of the time.

I did have another idea on the way to work today...
There are a couple ad types that keep popping up that we have a hard time dealing with...
"headsups" wherein someone sees a good deal in the local paper, craigslist, on the street or a friend, and thinks it may be of interest to fellow HAMBers. They want to post the info but then some dipshit starts asking detailed questions when it has already been explained that the person knows nothing more than what they posted. I think this info is good for the HAMB as it may help someone in here get a hold of some iron and do it justice.
Trades. These guys just can't come up with a price. Could work out to be a good deal for a fellow HAMBer. We've been sticking them in the Wanted section but that's not quite right either.
How about we make a sub forum for these kinds of ads? Replies should not be allowed in this forum.
Ebay ads either due to the bidding nature....
Just a thought.
I posted this thought to the other Classified Mods a while back when we were doing the Classified split. We agreed at the time to see how the current arrangement works out before adding more.
It's a whole lot harder to undo a forum change than it is to do it.
There is a way to search all of Craigslist. I don't recall how but I read a post soemwhere with all the switches it takes to do it...

you're as smart as you are handsome...
trades subsection is a great idea! let the dreamers dream!
i'd love to see a 'heads up' ebay/craigslist area, too. my bet is, it will be the most heavily visited area in the classified section.
I don't like it
just like I don't like that some people only use the HAMB for it's classifieds
I like to think of the HAMB as a place of knowledge first,
a place to shoot the shit second
and a place buy and sell last.
a heads up place for craigslist might be worth discussing
but hell no to ebay
