I think my Seagrave project is taking a fun turn.

http://i5.ebayimg.com/02/i/02/16/4c/a3_12_s.JPG

It is the same powerplant as the Blastolene Special. I plan on making enough mods to make it unique. I can't wait to go pick it up.

The intake/exhaust arrangement is assed backwards on this thing.

Any ideas for cool intakes?

Anybody know if the cooling fans blow up or down?

Gas or Diesel? Get a manual with it? Give me a Model No., like AVDS1790-2A or whatever and I'll see if we can round up a manual or two.

Yes.

If you go to a larger rural fire truck convention, they often have competitions where two trucks square up at a line, drive approx 1/8 mile, stop, and race to see who can hook up to a hydrant first.

I'd guess that you plan on entering such competitions and winning.

Just a guess, but I'll bet it's because he's trying to get your actual T.O. type data that has releasability clauses attached to it. Although I doubt it would truly be applicable after all these years - there's a blanket 25yr waiver for most info - including classified.

Basically the manuals are technical data for use by U.S. persons (essentially U.S. citizens), but if it's a gasser anything that might be around will be in the public domain though it's gonna be hard to find a manual as they were last made 30-40 years ago, but I'll see what I can do for ya. The AVDS stands for Air-cooled, V-12, Diesel, Supercharged, although they are really turbos on the diesels. Send me a PM when you know the model no. and I'll see what I can do. Used to work for the old Continental Motors and still have an "in" or two.

Can't help, but might point you in the right direction - lots of Japanese heavy equipment (Kobelco, Kubota, Komatsu, etc) use big turbos on their diesels - might be a place to start...

How does the length of the motor compare to the engine bay ?
Will the stock carb location clear the fenders ?

The new motor is quite a bit longer (maybe a foot and a half?) We haven't exactly figured out what/where it is gonna get cut....recess firewall vs move cowl back. We are also looking at possibly raising/lowering drivetrain.

The stock intake manifolds will probably get replaced by something different. ...not sure. over all packaging may help decide.

But I'm sure it's easier to say than it is to do.

I don't feel real bad about cutting on this one. Somebody beat me to it. This truck came from the factory with a roof. My research efforts revealed that Grand Island, Nebraska fire dept cut the roof of it in 1961.

How hard would it be to swap the heads, left to right?
It might be easyer to have the exhausts on the sides, and the intakes on top...

My dad asked the same thing. One cam is longer than the other to compensate for the stagger of the cylinder banks left to right. I don't know if that could be overcome (cheaply).

Unkl Ian

Then you need a special cam made.

That swap has been done on Moto Guzis, and requires a special reversed cam.

On a Moto Guzi you would have to turn the head around.
on this engine you could keep the heads pointed in the same direction, since there is a left bank and a right bank.
but the difference in cam lengths is a problem...

Actually I almost pissed on myself when I saw the stock cam lobes. It has a very aggressive roller cam in it stock. Ramp up is very quick, lift is high, flat across the top of the lobe and then a quick ramp down.

Honda CBX 1000 motorcycle cams were made in two halfs, and joined in the centre with an Oldham coupling. Makes them easier to manufacture and allows 'less accurate' alignment of the machined cam journals in the heads. Just a thought.

I just got off the phone with Randy (the guy who built the Blastolene Special) and he said that Jay Leno was having turbos installed on his car (by Gale Banks). Randy says he is in the process of building another tank powered hot rod and that he supplied a engine/trans combo to another guy. That means at least 3 more out there other than mine.

Hell, if they keep popping up.....we might have our own class at the drags.
