Been meaning to write you guys 'bout the awesome weekend that was had @ Samoa Dragstrip, this week, including our monthly Saturday Street Legal races hosted by the Eureka Police Dept. And since I now have Saturdays and Sundays off, got the first chance to stay all day and night workin' in the tower. But it turns out I'm the first actual announcer in the 2-year old program (at the 50-plus yr. old strip), and it was the first time they had music on the speakers (all I did was mike the radio while I went into the pits for driver info).
The format's quite an informal difference from the regular points-racing, since we don't use the timing, Portatree computer or 'tree lights ('cept for pre-stage lights). Instead, we have the ol' fashioned flag men (usually nutty Dennis Ellison or one of the cops), and I get driver/car info from meetin' them in the pits, which I love. With the pop-rap playing and me just wingin' it on the mike, I felt like a DJ at some awkward junior high dance, but the crowd and racers really got into it.
My bud Gene photographed tons of it, including this ride in Officer Wayne's company car (who really smoked the tires out, btw). Flagman Dennis has quite a habit of secretly motioning the cops first...
