you make it sound like the first?! it is pretty cool admittedly, shame the engine's in the wrong place - if your're going to do VW Gassers, it's got to be proper vw gassers! like these:
(some NHRA record setters in here, although none of my favourite - Lil' Snort...yet)

Marcus, That one reminds me of a car my neighbor had when I was groing up. 1952 VW Gasser, 401 Buick, Four Speed. I wish we could find it today as the guy would love to put it back together for the street. Years and 20/20 Hind Site really get to you. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well shit, I'm not complaining, I'm digging that '70s Ann Maragaretish sweet thang in the B/W photo.

I don't wanna argue with the anti VW guys on here... And actually I agree it doesn't really belong here (except for the old VeeDub dragsters maybe), but I just wanted to show you this...
I bought this mag only for this car... '57 Oval window built by Aaron Broughton (So Cal Speedshop guy). Personally I think this is one of the cleanest and nicest cal-lookers ever built.
I saw a photoshoot in a German mag today and it had a For Sale sticker on the window...

Traditional in one neighborhood may differ from another. A VW can be a hotrod. I can appreciate all types of custom cars. Just some people think they are too good for certain cars. I have built many customs. Including VW's.

i think that is mostly the case here. i don't see how a pre 65 Beetle is any different than a pre 65 Anglia (BRITISH), Fiat (ITALIAN), Volvo (SWEDISH) or any other pre 65 non-American vehicle, i just don't get it. i'd rather hear about ANY car as apposed to hearing about some Rockabilly band or what old celebrity died this week. what i really don't get is, if these people don't like the shit WHY DO THEY READ IT?? and better yet WHY DO THEY RESPOND TO IT??? my dog has more sense!!!

There was a Beetle like that here in Fremont...Sometimes I wonder if that wasnt the same car...When Goodguys were starting out..they used to have Bug shows and drags at Fremont,Some of these cars were just beautiful to look at..and the thing about Bugs were they are cheap to build and easy to wrench on...at the street races there was a white Beetle that was supercharged he shut down everyone except the Tubbed boys..Fucker was running 10's no doubt on the street!! I know I busted raggedy racing balls about Beetles because that what we used to do at the street races, because no way could you admit as a hot rodder or muscle car man that you liked the VDubs, but at 32 years old and having owned one myself,I dont care, they are cool little cars and were engineered very well..If anything they were inspired by Henry Ford! take em or leave Bugs will always be a part of the scene..
You fellas can bitch about my decision all you want - doesn't bother me and I'm all for open opinions.
That said, I have to pay the fucking bill at the end of the month and VW's aren't worth the dough to me. Maybe I would feel differently if they all looked like those dropped axle bugs that were on previously... Those things were rad... I also kinda like the old school ones with the luggage rack thing on top... Still, girl car.

Posting one VW post after another is not going to make them cool to somebody that does not like them.

which leaves you able to go to the VW boards all you want. If it's such a big deal start your own board. But it's pretty clear where Ryan stands. And I don't think asking for an accounting is a smart idea. Those who contributed did so knowing what the board was about, if you did so trying to change it to suit your taste, mistake on your part. I dig the board's stated purpose, I have contributed to keep it that way. If you need any help starting your own board I can point you towards some decent open source software and decent hosting packages, otherwise back to the program...

I've owned a bunch of Vw'S, and I've donated a few auctions to Ryan, but this is his place, and if he said "no more 32' fords" it's his decision. Check out www.thesamba.com (http://www.thesamba.com) , www.volksrods.com (http://www.volksrods.com) , or www.oldbug.com (http://www.oldbug.com) . All cool sites for the cooler side of aircooleds.

5 inch dropped magnum axle
Posie's spring
Speedway hairpins
Wilwood discs
VW engine, aftermarket Harley heads w/ 4 valves per cylinder
Hilborn injection
470hp@7,500 at the flywheel

Not this year... Even if donations did cover the costs, they are just that - donations, not ownership.
Close minded? Yep. I'm into traditional hot rods and customs... not VWs. I really don't mind a post every now and then (we had one a month or so ago on those dropped axle bugs that were rad), but I don't want a post a day on VWs. I don't really care if any of you do...
Bottom line, you guys can bitch all you want. If you don't like the HAMB, leave... No one is forcing you to be here and put up with my close mindedness...

I'm with Kustombuilder - the post gives the subject - don't read it if it's just going to piss you off. I've always dug the Cal look bugs and that 57 oval window is just what I'd build if I wasn't up to my eyeballs in this '47 Merc project. Old cars are old cars and Cal-look bugs have as much tradition as anything else going. Creative expression of transportation enthusiasm is good. Last week there was the bitching about some post on old Porsche's...
Some folks seem to spend too much time censoring the HAMB and worrying about OT posts that infringe on their delicate censibilities regarding what is a traditional rod or custom.
Quit complaining and build something yourself - VW, Fiat, Volvo, Ford, Chevy, Trablant, Zil or whatever http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Is the VW up there really called Tar Babe?
That's almost very offensive to me.
26Tudor
07-14-2004, 03:29 PM
Nads, yes, back in the 1970's, there was a very famous racecar called the "Tar Babe"- this was long before political correctness was even thought of, and there were no racial implications implied or intended. It was probably, next to the original EMPI Inch Pincher (the B&W photo with the Ann Margaret wannabee) the most famous VW racecar ever. It had a beautifully done chop top, and was campaigned by Greg Aranson, Ron Fleming, and Mark Thurber. They went on to form FAT Performance, a name well-known and respected in off-road racing to this day. The original car has been found, albeit completely changed from it's original configuration, in Mexico. It was one of the cars that showed what could be done with time, money, and ingenuity, to a little "watch-winder" engine.

i think mostly everyone has a different opinion of what a 'traditional hot rod' is. as far as im concerned, vw's werent in the US when traditional hot rods were being built. are they street rods, or customs? could be.
i also dont read any of the rockabilly posts. but to some people, they are part of the hot rod culture. no way in hell you will catch me with my hair slicked back, and my pants rolled up. not even on halloween. but i accept that to some people it is hot rodish, so i just dont read em.

I beg to differ with you Trey. The bug went into production in 1949 and was being imported to the states shortly thereafter.
This doesn't make them hot rods or customs ('cept for the ones that are/were) but they WERE here when most good ol' boys were screwing together their "traditional" hot rods.
