So are they the same thing? If not, what's a hub bearing?

Never heard of it. I would guess that its just another name for a wheel bearing...

Spud, most front wheels these days are fitted with a hub and disc assembly: the disc (or rotor) is held on to the hub assembly by the wheel studs. The hub bearing is usually much bigger (there is only one per assembly). An 'old style' rotor on spindle had 2 bearings (inboard and outboard) and a seal. Hope this helps,

This is typically a term used on front-wheel drive cars for the large bearings that are pressed into the hub carrier. This then holds the hub, which has the wheel studs in it and what the front wheels bolt to. Same general function as a wheel bearing.
