I received my new Hot Rod magizine over the weekend. It has a big layout for Bonneville. The thing about Bonneville is it has home engineered engines that run well and set records. On page 74 is a GMC powered roadster that runs a stock head going a 169 mph. On page 75 a flathead Chrysler 6 and on page 76 a Buick staight 8 mill that puts out 340 HP. WOW All of these engines are HAMB dragster engines that shows with some back yard work they are contenders. Also on page 60 is a picture I have not seen before of Dick Kraft's BUG. :) Roy

Roy,
Was the GMC powered roadster owned by JD Tone? He's an avid B'Ville racer and has a GMC powered roadster.

Yes it is J D and Patrick Tone running 13 to 1 compression Clifford intake with 750 Holley and a Vertex Mag. Put some older carbs and a distributor on it and it would be HAMB power. The Buick mill is a wonder because they said they spent 300 hours on the head. They are running stock rods and milled .270 milled off the block and head to acceive 10.75 to 1 compression. The Chrysler flathead 6 reminds me of the 440 Dodge car out in Cal. Bonneville is still about hotrodding.:D Roy

I've talked to JD Tone several times about GMC engines. He's been racing them for 30 years or so. He also holds 2 records at Bonneville.
Nice guy.

Jim,
It was rods I was waiting for...and never got. It seems Mr. Bob Johansen @ Howards Rods couldn't/wouldn't build the rods I ordered last December (December 2006). In fact, he even decided he wouldn't refund my $650 either. Nice guy! Lots of promises but nothing else. Now he has to deal with the Missouri Attorney Generals, Consumer Affairs Division.
I've found another rod that will work (8.10" long) and am presently building 3 sets of them. One set is for Roy (348chevy).That way we can have a light weight piston/pin/rod assembly that will be quite a bit easier on the crank and mains.
I've wasted almost an entire year waiting for those damn rods.
By the way, thanks for the offers of help you've extended to me, it hasn't gone un-noticed.

Well Bubba it's that time of the year again that the boat motor most likely will not be missed for quite a while. Or do you have some more tricks in mind. And have you made any more passes down the track since Mokan?

Mr. Ron, if it's not a secret, what rods are you using that are 8.1"? If it is a secret I understand.

Joe,
The car is complete and painted, just sitting there waiting for an engine. I spent most of today sorting thru rods trying to get 6 that weighs close to each other so they can be balanced. Then I have to put together 2 more sets for Roy and I.
The rods are from a Hudson.

Update on Hot Rod Magazine's old engine coverage. The March issue on page 118 has some info on the Mopar slant six engine with a sling shot dragster pictue on the facing page.:DRoy

Roy,
I think the slant 6 would be a screamer if you did a lot of port work, 14:1 CR and turned it about 8500-9000. I remember one of the small Chrysler products economy sedans was running 132 MPH on the track at Daytona with some mild performance additions.

If I spin the GMC to 8500 to 9000 I'll be killing spectators with flying pistons, rods and pieces of crankshaft.:DRoy
