Waggin's are bichin. There aren't enough around anymore, but once in a while there will be some cool old deal from around 1955 to 1964 or so. There ought to be a classic wagon club. Can you imagine taking the family on a road trip with a classic trailer hitched to it?
Now I have seen Edsels, and I have seen Oldsmobiles, and I have seen Chryslers and Fords (all wagons being quite scarce now), but I have NEVER seen a '57-9 Mercury wagon, ever. Any out there?
And can you imagine trying to restore one??? Where would you find the parts that are wagon-specific?

Here's mine. What do you expect for $75??
Not a wagon, but close enough. I just picked up rust free front fenders for this thing, and for a 55-6 Pontiac in this part of the world, that was no small feat. It's a 56 Poncho sedan delivery, really rare. 1583 built, Canadian only. I put in a rebuilt 57 rear end, 350/350.
Here's a link to my good friends Chris and Mike's site where they truely worship the American station wagons.
They are running some pretty fast times too.
http://www.wagonsofsteel.com/
Paul
oldcarglassguy did a good job listing the 4-door wagons. can someone fill in the years for them? he also mentioned his plymouth 2-door hardtop wagon and asked about others. there are the nomads and safari wagons, of course, but i can't think of any others, although there probably were.
while you guys are drooling over the pix shown here and scrambling to post your own, can someone list the 2-door post wagons? chevy made them most years in the late 50's and so did ford. i'm pretty sure there were early falcon 2-door wagons. how about chevy II's? the plymouth suburbans were 2-door wagons, weren't they? others?
how about sedan deliveries? these ran from model a days to the 60's. in the later years who made them?

Mercury had a two-door hardtop wagon in 57, 58, and 59. Four-door hardtops 57-60. Before and after were based on Ford bodies = no hardtops.

Answering the earlier question, who made 2-door wagons? I can't promise that this is 100% correct, but it's pretty close:
FORD
Fullsize 49-51 (woodies), 52-61 (all steel)
Falcon 60-65
Pinto 72-79
MERCURY
Fullsize 49-51 (woodies), 56-59 (all steel; unique 2-dr hardtop 57-59)
Comet 60-62
EDSEL 58 only
CHEVROLET
Fullsize 55-59 (maybe '60?)
Nomad 55-57 (unique hardtop doors/roof)
Chevelle 64-65
Vega/Monza 71-79
(Nova: never)
PONTIAC
Fullsize 55-56
Safari 55-57 (like Nomad)
PLYMOUTH 49-58
DODGE 53-57
STUDEBAKER
Fullsize 53-57
Lark 59-?
RAMBLER 50-55, 59-63
WILLYS JEEP 46-59 (later too)
INTERNATIONAL & AMC PACER, but who cares?
Never saw a 2-door from Olds or Buick.
I've seen nice 2-door custom conversions of a 51ish Chevy, a 66-67 Nova, and a 66 Galaxie.
I think that's the whole list. If you know of any I missed, please let me know.

Chevy only made a 4 door wagon in 61.........Shiny
Pontiac also made a two door wagon in 57, at least in Canada
They also made these, but I don't ever remember seeing one in the last 25 years. I have seen a 58 Pontiac sedan delivery, like the one above, though. Our provincial utility companies used sedan deliveries and panels a lot in the fifties and sixties, so there were quite a few kicking around years ago.
Travis
10-04-2003, 02:52 PM
Shiny is right. Last Chevy 2-door wagon was the 60 Sedan Delivery and the 60 2-door Brookwood. Well... that's not true. In 64 Chevy also did a 2-door Malibu wagon, I believe.
I always wanted to take a 59 2-door Brookwood (glass) and chop it 2" so I can use the hardtop/convt glass and then turn it into a phantom 2-door Nomad.
Sick, huh?!
Travis
'nother one. Didn't have a pic for a 59 though. Again, never ever saw one

Great additions, all you guys. I was completely unaware of the 57 and 60 pontiac 2-doors, although I realize that many Canadian models were never offered in the US. I have seen some early (49-52 era) Pontiac deliveries, but no windowed 2-doors.
Sorry to have slighted the Chevy Suburban guys. They even made a 3-door wagon!
Many of these must have been incredibly rare. I've seen a couple of fullsize '60 Fords, but never a '61 (although the '61 shows up in Tad Burness' Spotter's Guide). I've seen one '56 Merc, but never a '55. Several of the others appear in print, but I've never seen a live one. Kinda fun to hunt for them, though.

In case no one else mentioned it, there IS a club or two and a magazine for old classic trailers (like you'd hitch behind your waggin's). The magazine is/was called "Lost Highways". One of my friends has an airstream and he said their is a classic airstream club and they really get into it, like valuing the trailers based on how many panel sections are at the top etc. (dates the trailer and also a rareity thing). There are obviously guys into the itty-bitty "Mickey" trailers, too. I think there are restoration parts available from a few sources. One place was in Orange, CA a couple years ago...
You wagon guys ought to check into this stuff. Just be CAREFUL hauling a trailer, as the old brakes on these cars suck if you haven't upgraded. Plus bad handling, and bias tires to boot...
Too cool though.
This '60 belong's to a friend of a friend...fully bagged , pearled and damn nice!!

Safariknut, that is what is called an "airport limo"! I have only seen two in my lifetime. One was a Checker that I saw parked behind some business in Santa Ana, CA about 8 or 9 years ago, and the other was...
are you ready?....
...A '57 Chrysler that someone yanked the 392 hemi out of and sent to the Santa Fe Springs (CA) Ecology junkyard! It was out there for a week and a half before they crushed it. It had blue tinted glass or plastic panels along the roof. I wished I saved one of those. Somewhere in my posession I have a Polaroid photo of the car, as well as the VIN tag from the engine compartment that says "special" all over it... At least I think I still have that stuff. I might have given those items to a Chrysler parts dealer friend.

By the way, the pics I have posted are courtesy of Carnut.com
This site has over 26,000(probably closer to 30,000) pics posted. You can search by year or, in this case, by wagon.

JimC... I have seen the 2 door in person and had the chance to talk to the original builder earlier this summer.. real nice but who sold it because he did not like having the factory shit under it.. was slow and did not stop very good. I would love to have it, repaint the tan and throw it on my chassis.. The only thing I did not care for was the one piece rear hatch/tailgate....
since we are talking wagons again, here is another one for everyone...

BINGO! That be the one. From memory, the black wagon was leading the way with the white wagon next, then the rest of the car all in a line.
Not far from HB some dopey traffic cop pulls over the black wagon (I think), so everyone pulls over. The cop starts hassling him out about how low the car was or something, he then see all of the other cars lined up behind the car he pulled over. The cop then says something like... "Are you all in a club or something?"... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif What a twit!
Don't know why I didn't get a pic of that black wagon. Maybe I did, I just didn't scan it for some reason. I'll have to check.

Okay, that's enough...
I haven't worked on this for just about two years now. Hatch, Fuelpump and Fab32 will vouch for me on that. I do have a guy coming over today to look at my house electrical to get started on running power to my third garage shope stall. Go figure, I bought a new Miller welder a year and a half ago and I just bought my new 60 gallon compressor. I've got my old Lincoln 175 Pro TIG and plasma cutter and they just sit there staring at me, what a shame.
I really am going to get working on this beast soon. If any of you guys are looking for something to do this summer, the CNA Chevrolet Nomad Assc., is having thier anual convention at Westport here in St. Louis this summer, July 11th thru the 19th.
It would be nice to have this guy done for that, but I'm going to hold my breath. Although Hatch will agree that I only spent 7.5 months building my '40 Willys coupe, but my job then had many flexible hours, unlike my job now.
Oh well, all I can do is get working on it and hope for the best.

This 52 Plymouth 2 door hard top wagon that I'm building from 2 Plymouth wagons and a Plymouth Hardtop. Is an effort to be a one of a kind, Yet the first words out of everyone mouth is "WOW!! JUST LIKE A NOMAD" Now Nomad's and Safari's are by far the best wagons ever built style wise. BUT a slanted "B" pillar does NOT make them a Hard top by any stretch of the imagination. I'm planning on developing the road race capabilities of this car (seriously), and we had to do some "before" testing to acheive baseline numbers. The pics are pretty cool, and I'm happy to share 'em!
The wheels are 17x8 all around. It's lowered about 4 inches in front (spindles/springs) and 2 or so in the rear (springs only). It's about to get adjustable shocks, killer swaybars, poly bushings, and more.
I've also got another engine in the works, as the mild 327 of unknown origin currently residing between the framerails simply will not do. I'm pushing a 383 as far as I think I can on 87-octane, and fully expect 475-plus horses and near 500 ft.-lbs. The greasy old Powerglide will be replaced by a T-56. This is about to become one very bad ass wagon.
Her name is "Connie", short for Conestoga. I'll share performance numbers (skidpad, slalom, and quarter-mile) as I get them.
This is also my daily driver.

That NHRA Safari Ford is totally bad ass..but only if that lettering is "real" - It sure looks legit, and if the car has some drag racing history in its blood, all the better.
(skinny whites might look better than those wides...or maybe chrome reverses?)
Either way - kool wagon.

Such a great thread. Definitely brings a new identity to the grocery getter. I have to show my wife...She hates wagons. I wanted to get a Ranch wagon for a while and her distaste for wagons put a hold on that project.
Thanks for all the great shots.

Here's my '57 Plymouth 2-dr.
She's "a tad" rusty but she'll look a little better with a set of '56 Chrysler 300 wires and wide whites. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif At least the glass and grille are perfect. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif She already looks scads better, I need to go take another pic.
Anyone have a tailgate for a '57-59 Mopar? This one was hurt a while back and a poor body repair (filled it with bondo) has come undone and won't allow me to open it.

I LOVE the wagons!! But with three kids in car seats there arent a whole lotta options, so I have a few.
This one should show up as my bone stock 65 bisquik. I have since put duals on the 283 and would like to add a 4 barrel and OD this winter. Before we picked up the ole lady a new burb last night for her birthday, it was the lowest milage vehicle in the fleet.

The next one is my daily driver 95 caprice wagon. It's got the LT1, 3.73 posi in the back, street TC, and a custom bent up 2.25" exhaust. It's a pretty good sleeper since nobody expects a wagon to launch with a burnout. Here it is pictured with my longest roof of all - my 35' Bluebird.

Here's the '67 Belair I had before the 48 coupe I had before the 65 wagon. I was built so late they titled it as a 68 - kinda cool. It was a 250/PG car. I sold it to a dude a mile away that threw in a 4speed, mean 350, 4 wheel disc brakes, fat sway bars, etc. Tis pretty badass now.

I had got a ´64 as a daily driver a few years ago. In-line-six and PG, red steelies and shiny black paint, Mr Horse Power sticker in fender, blue dots in rear lights, peep mirror on the left side, shaved trims, beautiful!
Few pics: #1: Racing with PU.
