Does this mean it was running right before he "clipped the air tubes"?
What air tubes did he clip--did he saw the air horns off the carbs or something else??

One to one and a half turn is usually a good starting point.

Talked to him last night about this. A group of us got the car working just fine so he could drive it to Paso, which he did, and now he goes and screws it all up. Thanks Jay. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

So yes, the car was running just fine until he clipped the air tubes.

The full story:

He'll be posting here soon I think. His car was running rich at idle, so he decided to disable the idle circuit of the outside two of three carbs. His thinking was that since he's running progressive linkage anyway, the front and rear carbs are not needed at idle, so disabling their idle circuits should cut down on the richness of the idle mixture.

Now the car will not idle. It will run just fine.

The carbs were always loading up/ running rich at idle. I clipped the outside carbs air tubes so they ran no fuel dumped when the carbs weren't cracked open. The car of course then ran poor at low rpm, so I'm trying the tweek the air fuel on the main carb to compensate. Thanks for all help...
