Got some front end parts on the roadster last night, along with some other parts cleaned up. Still have alot to do to get her goin' by this summer. Motor and trans will be ready to mount soon. As soon as I get a trans mount, I can hang the motor and trans in there to fab the motor mounts. After this will come the rear suspension. Still tossing around banjo or 9 inch? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif I have al the brakes, backing plates, etc for the banjo, just wondering if it will hold up to the 401? Anyways, here are some pix.....Casey

There isn't many things better looking than a 6 carbed motor in an open front end car. The roadster looks great.

Love the way you roadster is coming together! 'Guess you're setting it up so that you don't have to cut the firewall, right? Those Nailheads are bitchen!

I wouldn't combine the banjo rear with the 401 nailhead though unless the nailhead is for show only. It would tear the old Ford rear apart if you stomped on it very often on asphalt or concrete. I've got a banjo behind a 322 Nailhead and Ford 3 speed toploader tranny, but it was only used on the sand so the rear and tranny survived (limited traction).

fast elvis, the 55 is my pops car. he had the car for 18 years then sold it to a trust fund kid who had loads of cash and let it sit outside for three winters until my dad bought it back for half what he sold it for. not a bad deal i guess. We redid the whole underbody last winter, disk brakes all around, lowered spindles, etc, the car is actually for sale!

fomoco, steering is gonna be run through the cowl via sprint car box or reversed corvair box. I prefer the sprinter box if I can find one without being bent over. I know schroeder still makes them, but they are too expensive. I'll show some pix when I get around to doin' it. gotta get the car rolling first!!

southfork, I'm gonna try like hell to not butcher the firewall too much. I moved the front crossmember up 1 1/2 inches to give me some more room, but it still needs more room. Those nailheads are longer than I thought! I didn't want to move the cross member up too far and sacrifice proportions between the grill and the firewall. if you move it too much it looks forced, ya know what I mean.

thanks for all the positive comments, I'll keep you posted

Looks very nice.

I especially like how the split bones tuck back under the frame rail.

As far as the banjo hanging in there . . . part will be how you drive it and part how much traction you have.

Run a skinny bias-ply and you have a safety fuse of a sort.
It'll spin and unload the torque applied to the axle & gears before something breaks.
What can hurt is get it spinning and then back off the throttle abruptly.
Most times that causes the tire to grab and shock loadings to the drivetrain go pretty high.

Got any pics taken dead on from the side with the camera about 3' high and the whole car in the picture?

Looking great!

I would use the 9" rear with that engine. It won't be out of place since pumpkin style rears would have been found behind OHV engines, and you be able to drive it more confidently knowing you're not always on the verge of breaking it.

Nashman, be sure to keep us updated with new pics when you build the motor and transmission mounts, and set the driveline in place. Very Cool project!

I'll keep you guys posted on any major progress. As for the banjo or 9 inch dilema, I bought a 64 ford 8 inch at iola yesterday. Couldn't pass it up, it was sooo clean and all the brakes, cylinders, and seals were new too. Plus it was the right width. I'll just have to purchase a new gear, the 280 isn't gonna cut it.

wingnutz, I live in bayview off of howard ave. real close to you.

Similar project going on here except I'm running an Olds 455...!

Not totaly traditional but an inexpensive budget build...! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

What shows are you going to make this year...?

Maybe we can meet up for a "Barley Pop" or two...? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Wingnutz - I'd be more than interested in seeing your 455 Olds/early car installation.
Specially since my little brother tried to talk me into running Olds for a couple of years after I started the roadster, but I stuck with the Buick anyway.

In view of all the stuff you can get for Olds I should have went that way and suffered with the rear mount distributor.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I thought the same thing until I tried finding a Tri-carb for the "Beast"...! They only had One tri-carb set-up and it came out in 1966 and I haven't seen any sell for less than $3,000 when they do surface http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif!!!

It's a "Big Ass" engine with a crappy header design and will require a lot to make it look correct in a tiny roadster!

I'm tripping over Buick stuff all the time...! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Nashman started this project fairly recently and has been able to assemble all of these parts quickly and they look "Right" for a Roadster...!

Mines an excercise in futility...! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gifhttp://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
