yesterday morning, some fucker ran a light while my room mate was turning and my roomie t boned the guys mini van with his chopper. the guy kept driving a bit so my roomie didnt blast throw the side window of the minivan. he got a hole in his left hand which cut some tendons. about 20 stitches combined in 2 cuts in his forehead and a hell of a black eye. no broken bones. but he wont beable to work for a while since he works at a harley dealership washing and detailing bikes. he wont beable to go to school for a while (3 to 6 weeks) and we will no longer be graduating together. we both go to motorcycle mechanics institute and have 4 months left which sucks for him. he got the bike 2 weeks ago, after finally getting a loan after some fucker stole his bike a couple months ago. he just got his settlement check for that last week, and now will have to go through that all again, and also try to find another fcking bike because his is toast. also another thing thats messed up. right after the accident. the guy my roomie hit actually didnt hit and run and stayed there. when they were waiting for the ambulance, the guy was preaching to my roomie about not wearing a helmet.first off try wearing a helmet when its 100+ outside. second off he wouldnt need to wear one if people didnt have cellphones permanatly attached to the sides of their heads!
im tired of this crap. its to the point where i am about ready to stop driving a bike. back home i didnt even know 4 people that road bikes. yesterday makes 4 people i know from school that have either went down or hit a car after being cut off. its pure crap.
since i have been out here. i cant even count how many times i have been cut off,and pretty much all of them have been from people on cell phones.i was once cut off on I-10 when i doing about 80. the guy started switching into my lame.i layed on the horn, and started to get my foot out ready to kick his door. the guy looked at me with his cell phone up to the left side of his head (i was on his left) and he fucking shrugged at me! he shrugged at me! like that would make a difference. is he going to shrug at my family, friend and my girlfrind if he killed me?
another time i was dribing to school and some guy started coming into my lane. again with his cell to the left side of his head, and me to his left side.i layed on the horn again he,didnt notice me until i was on the far yellow line of the turning lane.
and one more story which really pissed me off. i was on my way home from work one morning during morning rush. i was cruising about 55 down the access road next to the I-17.i was coming up on a light, i had the right away to people merging from the highway. i started to slow do because the light was red. some asshole in a minivan cuts in front of me,and cuts it really close. of course im watching in front of me and i saw him put his cell phone down, and flip me off!!
what the hell is wrong with people these days. i always hear people bitch about motorcycle riders, and how they cant see us,how we just ride for fun and dont need to be riding at all.for me riding a motorcycle isnt just for fun. it is my primary transportation.ive riden my bike to commute just about every day since august. at first i couldnt afford to drive my wagon.then the water pump went out, and then the radiator went bad. it has been down since jan/feb. even if it was running i couldnt afford o drive it every day.
so anyways enough of the rant. im sorry people.im just really pissed off and fed up with people today.. whats up?

haha sorry man. its an hour or so past my bedtime and i was a little too pissed off to worry about spaces..
the thing i find funny is when people cut me off when i DO drive my wagon. they are usually in cars about 1/4 the size of my 20 foot beast. i just laugh and think of their reaction to my 5000lbs of steel crushing their plastic car. hahah. but then i think about replacing all that front end sheet metal in my car and it brings me down. i will go back and space the post so no one else goes through what you did.

Somewhere there has to be some guy that can invent a handheld cellphone jaming gun that you can point and click and kill the phone servine to everyone you see on the phone behind a moving vehicle. I know a .45 works well but there aren't enough bullets in the world.

i need to start teaching myself how to kick off car mirrors while driving, without losing my balance. man i cant wait to get back to michigan where the shitty drivers are actually half way decent
I usta work with a guy who didn't own a car, just a Trimiran,an airplane and a Goldwing. He carried a .357 in the pocket of his windjammer and would pull it out and aim it when needed. I don't know if he ever pulled the trigger but it was enough to make some guys who were throwing empties at him make a right turn off the freeway, where there wasn't an off ramp, when he pointed it at them!
I'm glad your friend is going to recover (mostly, that hand will probably never be right.) and he learned a necessary survival lesson. If you can see another vehicle at an intersection, it WILL pull out in front of you, or change lanes on top of you or fail to yield right of way.
You gotta damn near walk your bike through intersectons. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
Around here it's not even "accidental." I think some homicidal drivers do it on purpose, because they can, and once your dead, your dead.

I agree completely, and I don't even ride!! People cut me off and then flip me off here ALL THE TIME!! It makes me crazy, and I half want to buy a 70's beater car just so I CAN run them off the road, or at least ram 'em!
Something about Phoenix too... I've driven in Michigan, and they are SO MUCH better drivers there, in my experience at least... even CA drivers, who get so much shit from the rest of the country, are wayyyyy better than Phoenix drivers in my experience... good luck out there, and stay safe... and if you see a blue and white '64 Impala Wagon, don't worry, I'll see you and I won't cut you off!!

it is the same crap every where you go. i have been almost run over pushed off the road and cut off more times then i care to think of. now i keep a pocket full of old lug nuts a toss them at the car after i pass them. i have also used old spark plugs. the porcelen will blow out a tempered window. another friend would carry an oily rag and toss it at the windshield. some days it scares me to go out on the bike.

Funny thing is, when I started reading this post, I had to pause and see where you were from, because I said to myself, "That sounds just like Phoenix." Shitty place we live in where you characterize it by the fact that nobody knows or gives a shit how to drive their automobiles.
I agree with Longroof, too, I used to live in Boston, which means I dealt with Boston drivers (Massholes) and Connecticut drivers, not to mention I've been all over at one time or another. The drivers out here are the most careless I've ever seen.
I'd draw the cutoff for a helmet at around 110.

Will probably take a while before anyone notices the difference; but several of the oil companies up here have now made it MANDITORY that personel pull over to the side of the road and STOP before using their cell phones. (or turn it OFF while driving)
They did a study and found that even with hands free setups, the drivers wern't paying attention.
Saw something yesterday about UPS drivers MAY NOT use cell phones while driving. If they're caught using them while driving; THEY DON'T work for UPS anymore.

here in Texas they made a law that you can't talk on the cell phone at all while driving, of course people still do it. Don't know how many other states have made laws like that.

Those cell phoniacs are not ever going to notice the mirror is gone! The only mirror they have even noticed in the car is the makeup mirror on the visor!

I ride, and both times I've been down is due to cellphone using assholes not paying attention.
I hope your friend gets better...
As for kicking mirrors off....that works ok, but I find the titanium toe sliders on my bike boots leave nice scrapes in the paint....
And a handful of 1/4" ball bearings tossed over your shoulder is quite effective at damaging glass (so I am told) http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I'm having a hard time being sympathetic with your friend here.
It's no major secret that the roads are dangerous these days. Between cell phones and soccer-moms, it's hard to be safe in a full-size car, let alone on a bike. If you're smart enough to observe that people are generally bad/distracted drivers and still elect to go out on two wheels, doesn't it make you extra stupid to not wear a helmet?
Your roomate would have have defintely gotten away from the accident with no black eye and no stitches on his face if he was wearing a full-face helmet, plain and simple. If he was wearing protective gloves, his hand might have escaped injury as well. If you get a good ventilated helmet the air moves right though it and you can wear it comfortably on hot days (speaking from experience).
I will never understand why people don't wear helmets. It's just fucking stupid. Even when I go out on my scooter for a quick 5-minute ride, I still wear a full-face, boots, armored jacket, jeans and gloves. I'd rather look like a dork-- that be cute and smeared all over the pavement.
Sure there's times where wearing gear is less comfortable than not, but I'd rather not spend weeks recouperating from something that could have been avoided. I can think of times where I've had a big rock bounce off my face shield that might have cost me my sight if I had left my helmet at home. I could't have even blamed a cell phone user on that one.
If it's too hot to wear a helmet, don't ride until it cools off. And if you aren't smart enough to wear one, don't complain about it when you get hurt...
Bikers have been being killed primarily due to head injuries since way before cell phones were even invented. It's PROVEN time and time again that helmets save lives and still people don't wear them. I agree that people should be better drivers but I refuse to give them the benefit of the doubt so I ride my bike like everyone out there is trying to kill me.
It's true that there are risks in everything we do, but it seems crazy to me to use that as an excuse for risky behavior
Would you...
Have unprotected sex with a crack-whore even though you had a condom available?
Elect to not vaccinate your kid from a life-threatening disease if the vaccine existed?
Paint your car in a spray booth without wearing a mask?
Handle HIV-infected blood without wearing latex gloves?
Are helmets, seat belts, condoms, vaccines, etc. 100% effective? No... they aren't. But I can promise you that many more people would be dead if they weren't around.

Stacey, I think the lure of NOT wearing a helmet goes along with the thrill of why alot of people ride to begin with, the danger of it all. But I tend to agree, a little, if I wasn't wearing my seatbelt, or a condom, or in this case a helmet, I'd still be pissed off if someone else caused the incident, but it's the risk I took.
That said, I stand by my original statement, PHOENIX drivers are the most careless out of anywhere I've been.

Gotta agree with you about wearing a helmet and gloves, boots and shit. May not be 'cool' or 'tough' to wear that stuff but it sure feels good to be covered up when you go bouncing across tarmac and body panels.
I once hit the road hard, scratched a groove into my helmet that went almost through the 'glass. Would been my head and face if I was being 'cool' that day.
And all that crap about helmets 'levering on the spine and snapping necks'? Not trying to pick a fight or prove anyone one wrong, so don't jump down my throat, but isn't it 2 different situations? the HANS device is for racing where the body is pretty muched attached to the car, so in a collison the head is gonna move indepently from the car and the body. however on a motorcycle the body ins't attached to the bike, so the head and body are gonna move relatively the same amount. like i said, not trying to prove anyone wrong. just my opinion.

hans device is for extreme whiplash(as in hitting something really hard).
no matter HOW tight you think you're strapped in,if you hit something hard enough, you're gonna move.
don't get me wrong, guys, a helmet in a caged car is manditory, have your head bounce off a chunk of pipe and you'll see why(i'm NOT gonna state the obvious thing about pipe and what it'll do to your head), but on a bike and somebody turning in front of you, a helmet might be what keeps you alive(but paralized).
let those who ride, decide.
pesonally, i think cell phones should be connected to the ignition.
wanna yak?
make it so the car won't run.
or make it so that if the fucker is turned on, the car won't.
we don't need more laws, just enforce the ones that are there.

Er, broken necks?
So you're telling me you're safer to have a bare head than a neck-breaking helmet on eh???
You reckon its safer NOT to wear a helmet, and let your skull just slide and skip across that asphalt safely, secure that a broken neck is a negligible risk today?
Or are you just politely informing me of the obvious fact that people do actually get broken necks when they fall off bikes with helmets on?

Just before I moved out of L.A. I was rideing my 93 flhs on the 405 buy LAX.. Traffic in the dimond lane was stoped. I was int he fast lane doing about 30 mph..Some fkn kid crosses the double yellow and I hit his pass door.It took my front wheel about a foot off the ground bent both my crash bars (hey they work http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif)tore up my handle bars. I've been riding for 20 years and this was My first accedent (except for 3 drunk one man laydowns http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif) The argument(sp) for fkn helments is bullsh#+. If helments make it safe for bikes then why not make drivers where the type of helments and neck braces that NASCAR drivers wear. That would make it safe for the drivers right. My best friend was killed by a lefthand turn jacka$$ after leaving his navy base HE WAS WEARING FULL LEATHERS HELMENT AND THE ORANGE VEST, you have to wear those on base, you can't protect yourself from dumbass people.
