I have an idea for the new Super Shop office and want to get some input. Some of ya'll remember hearing about the new shop with hamb apt overhead. It's gonna be a 15x25 apt, that will double as office space and center for all the cool stuff I accumulate that Momma doesn't find so cool.

I am building a recessed area in the walls (2x6 walls) to house all of the vintage trophies from my dad's early racing days. Kind of a tribute wall for my pops.

Here's what I was thinking......recess the case where it will be flush with the rest of the walls in the office, with a plate glass frame, with some neon in the top shining down on all the cool abstract shapes. ( we have some really cool early trophies with cool diggers as tops) What would be a fitting backdrop for the case? I thought about building a scale Christmas tree, that would sequentially light up.....gimme all your ideas.

Dan get your brushes ready....you may be the first guest in Casa De Root apt extravaganza.......

.....how about a blown up shot of the "Drag-n-Fly"???

It would look cool, fit the theme AND signify that the torch has been well passed. What better "tribute" to "Pops??" IMHO........... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think you should let the trophies speak from themselves and stand out as much as possible. Just "black out" the background with a nice dark, solid color. Maybe maroon/burgandy or really dark green or even dark gray or black.

You let me know, a couple weeks in advance, and I'll be glad to come throw some paint around! I might be headed to Kansas soon and I could combine the two trips! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Anything to get outta S.A. for a few days.

I'll let you know Dan. It'll still be a while. The shop should be built by next week...then starts the transformation... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

JK, I can always count on a State employee to supervise...now where did I put my shovel? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hey Mate,

I like the idea of the car in the background... if you make it darker and slightly blured before having it printed...will nto detract from the trophies and will provide a nice dark background for them as well.

I'm with Barnett. With such a display unit I'd also be inclined to move things around every now and then and of course there's always going to be the next bit of neat stuff you find that's so cool it has to go in the cabinet. Using black felt as the background would allow you to attach the odd pic using velcro and provide the means to change the displays without having to repaint etc.

I'd have glass side panels with vertically mounted flouro lighting behind the glass to illuminate the display.

I'm trying to think of some kind of neat framing method for the glass panel to make it look like it's permennatly sealed shut, by hiding the hinge/s and latching mechanism. sort of frame the glass so the whole deal looks like a big painting mounted to the wall.

So you get acused of being off with the pixies too, huh?

An idea for the frame, a basic inner frame made of softwood that sits flush with the drywall panelling or whatever you are using. The glass would fit into a 'machined' edge in that, then to retain the glass and give the 'picture' some life, an outer frame made from old fence pailings (slats or whatever you call them there). Leave them raw or however they were on the fence you ripped then from and maybe add some appropriate graffiti to add to the rustic look.
