I just got this front engine dragster chasis. I am gonna see what I have to do to get it legal to race, HAMB Drags here we go! can anyone tell me what kind of chassis this is? The guy I got it from wasn't sure.It has a 125" wheelbase, roughly. I have the axle and a rearend housing, I need to get all the rest of the parts. Any leads would help. I plan on runnin an Injected 283 Chev, with a shorty glide. Should be a fun ride. Joe Boghosian(Engine wizard) is gonna help me with the motor, so it should scream! I never thought I would find one of these I could afford!

Can't help you with what kind it is, but it looks like its good and straight. I'll be interested to know how much trouble you have coming up with the rest of the parts though.

I had a chance to buy a stripped down frame like that for $300 a few years back, but I figured by the time I had the rest of the Parts I would have a lot more money in it than I was willing to spend.

Bitchen Larry!

Get an NHRA rule book if you do not already have one... Also, load the thing up in the back of your truck and take it to the GG Drags in Bakersfield on November 1st or 2nd... ask t see Ken Gentry. He is the chassis cert guy for Division 7... he will tell you where the bars need to be added to make it leagal... he may even have his sonic checker to check the wall thickness of the tubing... which is all a mute point until it runs in the 9's... but with anything over a stock SBC, it'll run 9's EASY. I can also tell you (if the tubes meet the minimum wall thickness) that you will need to add another hoop over your head and a "helmet bar". The helmetr bar rule was enacted this past year and is mandatory on all cars with a five or six point roll cage. Also, there are two bars that should be added between the rear bar and the two that are just up from that... there is a "straight edge" test that they do... basically you should be able to put a straight edge on the outside of all the bars and it should not intrude on the seat... also, the protection under the seat isn't really spelled out in the rule book... but take a look at some of the pics of diggers at the GG drags and you'll get an idea of what they want... I think a 1" structure should be minimum. (we protect ourselves pretty stoutly on the top... but forget our butts).

Also, when you start looking over the rule book, give me a call or e-mail me if you have any questions... and meet up with me at Bakersfield! I wanna check your car out!
(talk with Shag too... he's gone through a lot of this)

And Joe Begosian??? He IS the man if Fresno that builds motors! His stuff kicks ass... (I went to school in Fresno)
Sam.

Hey SamI, thanx for the info! I have this guy comin next week to look at the frame. He used to be a NHRA tech insp. He is gonna sonic the tubes and send me on the right path. I figure if the wall thickness is thin, I could duplicate the chasis fairly easy. I have friends who have mandrel benders. Also Joe B. is basically like my Grandpa. His son married my mom's sister.Go figure. And my dads shop has been next door to Joe's for over 20 years. I have had the privledge of growin up with him. I have seen alot of neat shit roll in and out of there! can't wait to get the Digger goin! Larry

Larry, I just noticed a couple of things... one, the distance from the hoop to the back of the cage may be enough for you to just add a bar BEHIND the main hoop that is there... and keep the mucho-bitchen' single bend hoop up front, where it counts. Also, Kent Fuller (Mike Bishop will tell you too) is one of those guys who remembers EVERYTHING about the old diggers that guys used to make... I think he identified Shag's digger too... anyway, it looks a little heavy to be a Fuller Chassis... but then again, the single mount for a wish-bone instead of a four bar front is kinda unique for such a large tube'd chassis... maybe send some pics to Mike and he can forward them to Fuller.

And above all... keep us POSTED!!!
Sam.

Congratulations.Looks like a great start .Somthing you might want to get is the S.F.I. Specifications for front engined dragsters. It diagrams all the tubes, wall thicknes and placement.Mine is for 6.30 to 7.49 but i think the construction would be the same. Sorry i dont have an address but you should be able to find it. S.F.I. Foundation Inc.P.S not cheap but really good yo have.

I just forwarded the pics to Fuller for a possible ID. I'm not certain, but they might have already left for the reunion.

Thanx guys! I'm headin down Sat for Bako. Gonna take alot of notes on FED's. It would be cool if I only had to add a few bars in order to run 10- and slower. I think I would rather build a new chasis than have to cut the back half off this one. Who knows? Either way this will be the coolest Hot Rod I have ever driven!

Mr. Hack, you probably already know that in order to be able to run your hot dog cart at NHRA-sanctioned events, you and your crew will have to have your weiners inspected, and they'll also want to see current SFI certification stickers on your buns.

It's not so bad.

The weiner inspector is Chuck Lombardo.

My dad used to be the Division 7 director, and will be in the swap at the reunion. Bring a couple of pics and show him. He remembers everything, and knows the rule book really well. He has a dark green chevy pickup with a camper shell and an ez up tent thing. He usually sells high-performance parts like injectors and blowers and stuff. He parks along the fence and may have a small trailer in tow. Oh yea, and his name is Bob.
