BBC Oil capacity

I'm getting the coupe ready for the Syracuse Nats next week. Changed the oil and a bunch of other stuff.
Here is the question; what is the oil capacity of a 454 Chev? I installed a new filter and poured in 7 liters of oil and the dipstick still reads as needing a quart.
Don't ask me about liters vs. quarts.....metric measurement is a government conspiracy to screw up old guys. Its working too.
Oh yeah, the 454 is out of a '90 Chev SS pickup truck. Bone stock.

I believe a 1990 Chevy 454 holds 7 quarts of oil. Double check your original application against a parts store's book. 7 Qts sounds about right to me...anyone else?

I am sure it is 3 gallons, or was it 3 litres?

3 gallons is a LOT of oil for a Chevy...3 MILK jugs of oil? After changing mine, it usually fills up one (less than 5 quarts.)

7 US Quarts = 6.6244703 Liters...

7 Liters is = to 7.396817825570144 Quarts, so he over-filled a little.

3 US Gallons = 11.356235999999999 Liters... That's a whole lot of oil.

3 Litres only equal 0.792516111852554 US Gallons, so I doubt it's the other way around.

The general rule of thumb is, an older V-8 (chevy, ford, chrysler) holds 5 quarts, but I remember BB Chevy's didn't fit that rule... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My truck takes 12 qts of oil. 1977 Chevy 454.

I took it around the block and then checked it again. It now reads full with good pressure.
What a dork.......I should have done this in the first place!!

When I change the oil in my '90 SS454 it takes 6 qts if the filter is changed to. The normal capacity for a 454 in most applications is 5 qts with the filter but an SS truck has an oil cooler, so you need the extra quart.

The BBC takes 5 quarts when using the standard stamped pan and regular sized oil filter. Using a pan with a deeper sump or "wings" or adding an external cooler will change the required amount.

My 92 Chevy Dually with 454 and oil cooler package takes 7 quarts with filter change, if my memory serves correct.
