Brush blends are and easy way to create a transition
from one color to another on small projects.
Done properly,it will look airbrushed.
Cheap foam brushes are perfect for this, use whatever you have.

Note the letters when I'm applying the paint.I wanted the transition around the letter C.
Hopefully the colors look better on your computer than they do on mine.

#1 Draw the outline with a Stabillo.Keep going over it until your satisfied.

#2 Outline the shape in vinyl tape. This is 1/8" wide tape so it will turn easy.
I use Colad brand,3M Fineline is another good brand.Don't buy cheap tape.

#3 Mask over the design. Here I'm using R Tape brand application tape.
Originally intended for the vinyl sign trade,it has a low tack and is easy to remove.Available in many different widths,up to 36"

#4 Cut out the design.Stay on top of the vinyl tape, and just cut through the application tape.
The blade should not hit the panel below.

#5 Peel off the application tape from the middle of the design.Notice how the green vinyl tape defines the edge of the design,if you don't cut the application tape perfectly,it's not a problem.

#6 Start brushing on the color. This is 1-Shot Vermillion.
It needs to go on wet,and you have to work pretty quickly.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/image_uploads/461263-DSCF0026.JPG

#7 Spread the first color past where you want the transition. In this case, down towards the D.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/image_uploads/461265-DSCF0027.JPG

#8 Now start at the other end with the other color. This is 1-Shot Chrome Yellow.
Again,it has to go on wet,and quickly.

#9 With a light touch, spread the second color over the first,
back past where you want the transition to be. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/image_uploads/461271-DSCF0029.JPG

#10 Now clean the brush, and with a light touch, pull the first color back over the second.
Clean your brush on a papaer towel after every stroke.Start around the B,and pull towards the C.

#11 Clean your brush and pull the second color back into the first.
Start around the D,and pull towards the C.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/image_uploads/461285-DSCF0031.JPG

#12 When your satisfied, remove the application tape.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/image_uploads/461288-DSCF0032.JPG

#13 Remove the vinyl tape.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/image_uploads/461293-DSCF0034.JPG

#14 Should look something like this
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/image_uploads/461295-DSCF0035.JPG

#15 Outline with 1-Shot Process Blue.
The low res digital makes the outline look like Hell, but hopefully you get the idea.
That is all the stuff used in the background.

Nice tech. Where can you find the tapes you mention?Specialty/hobby shops only or one of the local hardware giants? Thanks.

Application tape is available from any place that sells Vinyl Sign Supplies.
Look in the local Yellow Pages for "sign supplies".
Places like N. Glantz or Mid West Sign Supply, you can probably find it online too.
Transfer Rite and R Tape are decent brands.
A 6" roll will last a long time,is easier to apply than regular masking tape and leaves no residue.

For Colad,or Fineline,if your sign supplier doesn't have it,try Body Shop suppliers.
It comes in several different widths,
the narrow stuff turns easier, the wider stuff is better for straighter lines and gentle curves.
