I got this Edelbrock 6x2 log intake for my merc 383. It's got tiny water passages at all 4 corners. I don't have a good picture of them, but they are about 9/16 - 5/8 inch in diameter where it mates to the head. Then it's got tapped 5/8" holes going out the front and back. The original intake had the water neck on the front. Are these tiny water passages gonna be big enough? what about the back ones..block them off?

now now I know what you are going to say.... But I was thinking this would be for a model A that I don't have yet. I know I have too many projects. Maybe it will go in the shoebox..It a wide-ass engine though.
not the voice of experience but,
if it were me I would run plugs in the rears and open up the fronts to flow the same as the stock manifold.
the little passages were prolly 'nuff for the strip but might not be enough for the street.

I also found these gaskets for sale on Ebay. They claim to be "Performance" gaskets, so they might be different from stock. I didn't have time to take my intake off before I left. Anyone have a stock MEL intake lying around that could comapre the water passages?

I run a log manifold on my big Hemi. I use the front water outlets with hose adapters on each head. They can't be anymore than 5/8" big. It runs at 180 all day long.
How big is the HOLE in the thermostat in the stock engine? (coolant only flows trough the hole in the t/stat)
I would suggest finding the area of the hole in the thermostat. Then, armed with that information, find the area of the holes in the 2 fittings your are going to use in the outlets in your new manifold and add them together. Compare the area of the stock thermostat hole and the area of the 2 manifold outlets added together. If it's close, I wouldn't worry about it. If it's not close, do something about it untill you have the same (or close to the same) area.
To find the area of a circle multiply 3.14 x radius x radius
(3.14 x R squared)
Example: The DIAMETER of the hole in the thermostat is 1".
Find the RADIUS.. divide the diameter by 2: = .5"
Solution:
3.14 x .5" x .5" = .785"
The area of the hole in the t/stat is .785"
The diameter of the hole in the fitting in ONE of the cylinder banks is 9/16".
Convert the fraction to a decimal: 9 divided by 16 =.5625"
divide the diameter by 2: .5625" / 2 = .28125"
Then find the area:
3.14 x .28125" x .28125" = .2483789"
The area of one of holes in the fittings is .2483789"
You have 2 fittings, so multiply that by 2: .2483789" x 2 = .4967578"
.785" t/stat area
- .4967578" manifold outlets area
___________
.2882422" area difference
Then judge what to do from there....
