Sounds like a shorted dimmer switch was the first/primary problem. Likey you now have a bad generator...may be related, or just coincidence.

At either rate, replacing the generator with an alternator is an easy deal, with common factory fodder. Some late 60s factory brackets from a junkyard, swap meet or buddy's stash will hook you right up...or you can buy aftermarket chrome ones. Just get the brackets to match your water pump, (long or short, yours is likely short) and you'll be able to bolt on a stock GM alternator.

For simplicity's sake, an internally regulated 63 amp common GM alternator can't be beat...and they're only thirty bucks plus a core charge around here!

You can go with a "one wire" internally regulated alternator, but wiring up a "standard" internally regulated unit ain't no big deal, either.

The big wire held on with a nut and stud goes to your battery...use the same wire from your generator. The red wire on the two-prong plug is the "exciter" wire...I run that to the accessory side of the key switch, but any keyed power should work. The white wire is for your charge light.

(If you wire the exciter wire to the accessory side of the switch, the "alt" or "chg" lite will be on while the key is turned to accessory, or when they key is 'on' but the engine isn't running...just like a late 60s/early 70s GM system works.)

It's not THE way, it's A way...but it's a simple affair no matter HOW you do it. You can also run an externally regulated GM alternator if you wish.

Yeah, what he said. BTW Hack, do you wear a white lab coat and carry around a clipboard like a mad scientist? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Nah, but I've been known to wear a long, white fur and carry around a HAMB calendar! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Yep, could be the generator. Could be a fusible link or a burnt wire caused by the short.
