How many people out here are running four bangers? Are there any engines other than the A and B and Chevy II's that are popular? I ahve a "Go Devil" Willys engine I was thinking about saving for a modified project, I remember reading about a salt car running one of these, does anyone have hop-up info on them? Thanks everyone, I would love to see some cool 4 banger pics too!

Ford made some. The t bird turbo 4cyl is pretty cool, and the pinto's are used in circle track racing.

This 2.5L Iron Duke and 5-speed from a '79 Chevy Monza will be under the hood of my lakes mod. There will be a Weber 40DCOE side-draft on the right side and an Offy-style 4 into 1 header on this (left) side. I like it because of the cross flow head and the fact that the whole assembly w/tranny only weighs about 450 lbs.

bigron;those triumphs are pretty sturdy, they were originally designed for a small english tractor.they're usually around 2 liter displacement, and have removable cylinder liners,so you can replace a piston and cylinder in the car without having to pull it out for a rebore-george

I asked a couple days ago about a Mopar 2.2... apparently you can use an early Dakota trans to make it RWD... but for power I would go Quad 4, my 442 with a 2.3 was a screamer!

Uhhh...

I was just given an '83 Tercel... Its FWD, but the motor is set front to back, you, know, normal style, and the fwd trans is behind it... Was there ever a toyota RWD trans that would go behind a 1.5L 3A motor?

The paperwork is FOOKED on it, I may just drive it over to pick-n-pull and try an get $70 out of it.... although I'd really like to have the steering column U-joints out of it...

Another marine Mercruiser, a 470

Next time I'd like to do a Poncho 194. I see someone is casting the '64 era manifold that looks like a zoomy and there is a new Tiger head that flows 400 CFM. (Not for street use, but I like a challenge). My machinist has 3 slant 4's but has not gotten back to me if any are Sprint versions (4 bbl).

I also inquired about the Mopar 2.2 and was told the Dakota trans does not have friendly ratios so grab the whole combop out of a Jeep Liberty.

cornfieldrodder

Liberty has the new 2.4 engine, what a screamer!! The Dakota ratios feel similar to the 2.5 S10 set up. Ok for drivin' around, but you wont win any drag races. A guy runnin a four prolly wants it for sporty drivin', not racin' anyhow. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
The locost webrig has a site that has a bunch of info on what trannys fit what forein engines. I beleive the Tarcel will bolt up to a RWD Corolla trans from the 80s

Did some work at a shop with a bad ass Deuce Roadster in the makings. Runs a Ford Focus motor and a T-5 trans from a mustang. Looks like an Offy the way it's set up.

hi metalshapes
My car is basicly a very modified belamy chassis ( 50's hop chassis for ford pop sports car) very modified it has a 100e engine with a e93a ford pop 3 speed gearbox torque tube and rear axle it has pop brakes all round but they are converted to hydraulic operation
i moved the rear spring to obove the axle instead of behind it does have an aquaplane head I also have a shurock supercharger which i might put on it but will have to change the head or run a couple of gaskets as the compression ratio may be a bit high for a supercharger

thanks for the interest

Very nice, man...
If you run into problems with the Shorrock, let me know.
I still have some spare parts for the smaller one of the 2, the c75B.
Like several virgin, unmachined cases...

Yes I am... ( and Berpop is my favourite...)
But the Blowers are in Holland ( where I am from ).
I was going to put one on my Fiat Abarth, but the FIA changed the formula for blown engines before I got around to it...
I left them there when I moved, hoping that a buddy of mine could swap them for Lotus Twincam parts...
If that doesn't happen I'll have them shipped here, they would look really nice on a Triumph Bobber as well...

FWIW, I'll throw in with an endorsement for both the early Datsun "bangers" and the GM "Iron Duke" motors.

I had a '76 Datsun wagon and the SOHC 4-cylinder in it was really healthy. Plenty of torque and good top-end power too. A great hiway runner. The four-speed tranny was smooth and sturdy too. I always thought about keeping the drivetrain for a modified roadster, but the body was real nice too, and I got an offer for the whole car I couldn't refuse.

My daily driver now is a little GMC PU with an Iron Duke 4-cyl and 5-speed tranny. I love it. Torque to spare and it'll run 85 mph on the interstate highways all day long. I think the factory 5-speed is geared particularly well for the motor.

Neither are very exotic, but they would make a nice, depenable package and shouldn't be too hard to locate - or too pricy.

Hi Kentucky,

Go here (Willywilly) (http://clubs.hemmings.com/clubsites/wocv/willywilly/willywilly.htm) for Willys Hopup, although the page says their heads are currently out of production.

My buddy is building a track roadster using the 20-R Toyota engine and trans from a Celica. Should go pretty well in a fly-weight T.

Cool!

There was a series of articles a few months ago in Street Rodder about the Quad 4. From memory, it's not too bad an undertaking to use one, and they do look cool.

I had a Willys 4 in a Willys Jeep. Granted the thing had like 4.30 gears but top speed was about 45, and it was a slug. Maybe with a fresh rebuild and in something really light like a modified it would be ok.

Hey brewsir, that engine looks too cool!

What year/car is it out of?

The only cool Toyota 4 banger I knew of where the DOHC 4AGE.

early seventies corrolla I think. I found it at the swap meet...some racer had gathered all the parts to go fast and then died...his wife had some friends sell it.....I didn't even have to talk them down on the price! Its supposed to be about 150hp...according to my builder.
