Since it seems like 'flake is such a hot topic lately - Has anyone ever flaked an engine? My younger brother is building a 302 for his Falcon and wants me to paint it. I was thinking that a gold metalflake with finned valve covers would look sharp. How does it hold up under heat? I was thinking a base/clear? I have little experiance with the real stuff, mainly PPG Prismatique and Flamboyance colors, which isn't really it.

Probably depends on what kind of use the car will get. But it sounds like a cool idea!

my friend flaked his years ago and some of it turned brown, like the flake heated more than the paint and burned the paint...looked good for a little while, but looks shitty now

I flaked the SBC in my 52 7 months ago and its held up fine .... of corse my engine runs at no more than 180 degrees ...... the temp will have alot to do with how well and how long it holds up. urethane is the only thing id use on the engine.
