I get home from work today, no wife. Shortly after that she pulls up in an old Saturn. Last night she told me about a car she found for her 16 year old daughter. We briefly talked about it but nothing was decided. I thought it had to many miles on it. Anyway she bought the thing without even giving me a call at work. WTF. What would you do, im kinda pissed!!!!!!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Ain't worth getting pissed over, but I would refuse to work on it when it starts falling apart.I tried to talk my daughter out of buying a car once that she just HAD to have(93 Sundance which is an Indian word for POS).When it started disassembling I refused to do anything to it.Then SHE was pissed! Not my problem.
Basically you can't undo what's already been done.Like a friend of mine used to say:"Don't try to rationalize WHY it feels good to get laid;just lie back and enjoy it!"

wait for her to go to bed, drop it off at the local Bel Air parking lot with a For Sale sign on it. "You bought it without talkin to me, I sold it without talkin to you"

Saturns suck, but it's not worth fighting over. Let Mom and Daughter bond over this one. Be thankful you have a wife that can think for herself.

Sounds good tell I think about the motor - tires-..........I have to buy ( for my daily) out of my swap meet or other money I have drummed up on my own.
Wow no wonder I got layed last night, without an argument.

I have yet to see the saturn that's worth anything more than a mild disagreement. Screw it, let her find out why you didn't want to buy it. The worst that can happen is you could be wrong...and that's good, ainnit?

You sort of sound like an asshole here... go back and read your post again. I'm sure your not an asshole.
I wonder how much shit you've bought without asking her (if you can't think of anything, do a quick inventory of your gargage, basement, shed, etc).

Asshole? Yes. Spend family money on car stuff? Very rarely, Never spent more than 50 bucks on something without talking first.
The part that piss's me off the most is she talked to her ex about it and not me. I told her maybe she should go live with his punk ass. HOWS THAT FOR ASSHOLE!

"her" daughter sound's like the girl is not your's. So like a couple of other HAMB's stated: it's 'their' baby. But, if your handy with late model re-pair....I'm sure you and the wife can 'barter' over the 'payment-due'. Leverage.

A S aturn isn't worth fightin' over, but an older one isn't worth fixing, either. The sohc engines aren't too bad to work on, though, so maybe it'll be not so bad.
Remember, GM marketed the brand directly to women and non- automotive guys. They placed themselves as a kind of an American Volvo, which they're not!! Don't blame your wife for wanting something so "good" for her child.
At least she didn't fall for an old 70s Fiat!
Do remember to not let your project funds pay for any part of a repair on cars you don't want around. You aren't an asshole for refusing to finance projects you want no part of if you were willing to present acceptable alternatives.

She took the initiative to get her daughter a car, I see it as a free pass to spend an equal amount. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Girlfriend has a 97 SL1... Lessee, look out for premature battery, alternator and oil pump failure, door check straps that break (waiting for pick and pulls to have "new" '97s show up).
Oh and our local Saturn dealer, who used to be fair, started finding $300 worth of work to do each time it came in for an oil change.
Before anybody jumps my shit, the time I have to work on cars, I want to be working on MY hot rod, not the POS daily drivers. I'll pay somebody trustworthy $20 including filter and oil, to change it. Since the Saturn dealer went crooked, I get to change the oil http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

If you are happy with her otherwise, let it slide. I'm on my 3rd marriage, most of the shit I let bother me in my 56 years of life really didn't make a rats ass in the grander scheme of things. Oh yeah, when the piece of shit breaks don't tell her you told her so. Just fix it for her and you will keep on getting laid.

I think a kids first car should be a piece of shit. The odds are greater that their inexperience at driving will lead to an accident. So it should be a piece of shit that gets destroyed, not something worth keeping. If they learnt o handle the car well, then get them a better car and pass the shit on.

maybe when the first repair comes, your step daughter should go to her dad and ask him to help pay for it. If her daughter really wanted the car, let her help PAY for the repairs,The best lesson you can teach a child is that there is NO SUCH THING AS A FREE LUNCH. Believe me I made my share of mistakes with my kids, and it all boils down to resposibilty.now that they earn their own $$$ they are responsible to fix it or have it fixed, If you become the bottomless money pit they will shit all over you, not a comment, but a fact, been there...

She had three from a previous marriage and we have one together.
I love them all like they all were my own.
They all have to get a job so they can afford to buy thier own car, pay thier own insurance for it, pay for all the maintinence too.
It's thier's not mine.
They pay for all of it.

wait'llyou have to change the alt!
that ain't no bracket, it's part of the block(don't break it!)
there's worse cars out there, i just don't fit in a saturn, no leg room.
btw, birth control ain't built in, you can always bone her on the hood or deck lid....
uh, wait, that's one of MY fantysies http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
i feel your pain! nothing worse than being a "car guy" FORCED to work on some late model POS that you didn't want to deal with in the first place! i was given a late model blazer with a blowed up engine by my GF's parents, i just happened to have an engine from a donor vehicle, so i waste a few weekends stabbing the new motor in. ok, so a few short weeks after the engine is in, the fucking tranny starts making noise, i check the fluid and it is a nice "roasted metalflake" color, fuck. shoulda just parted the stupid thing out! figures to get screwed on a free car! the worst thing is, my GF's mother, says, "it's so good for you to have a reliable car now" http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif the 4x4 don't work, the brakes are fucked, no fucking maintanance other than oil changes, i know their mechanic, he's a worthless hack.
you got good reason to be pissed. what should you do? when you're talking on the phone to buddies, subtly talk about "ex wife #1" and "ex wife #2", later, when she says" i thought you were only married once before me? who's number two?" you reply "i was only married once before you! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

I agree to just not work on it, but don't make any issues about it. You can offer advice but that's about it. I had an ex-GF who decided to go buy a Honda CRX-Si... I never did work on that car... but still got to work on her...

You definately need to keep the project fund seperate from the rest of your financial life. If possible, it should always be self-sustaining and off the books so to speak.

It has nothing to do with her knowing. I mean that those numbers, positive or negative, never get included with the household budget. If you work on stuff for cash or sell stuff, it doesn't get included with your life's $$. If times get bad and you have to supplement the family income with projects, you dedicate those projects to the cause. One would assume that the cool stuff would take a back seat in those instances. Now if wifey-poo wants a new bedroom set or swimming pool, the hot rod/ bike $ never gets included 'cause it is a self supporting hobby and those funds will need there own reconciliation.

I disagree with just letting it go. Ask yourself why she asked her ex instead of you ? Could it be that he cares more for the girl, or are you not involved with her life ?

I think she talked to him becouse she got him to pay for half of the car. Its his dauter. This isnt just a one time thing I can let go, its going to go on and on ( kinda like this thred ) help with getting and paying for insurance - dmv - gas - oil - tire - dents - clutch for rookie BLOND driver.....Yes she has a job and good grades and deserves it. If I dont work on it they will know im an ass hole. We cant have that.
The car itself looks ok ( one elder owner 95 w 89000 mi.) came with a chiltons in the back seat, that kind of worryied me.

Ok, asked for opinions, I will now give in and rant...
After being married to a lady that had children from a previous marriage, I learned a lot of patience with situations such as this.
A. No matter how one tries, he cannot replace DADDY unless DADDY is a complete loser who absolutely makes no bones about the fact he HATES his children.
B. If there is a decent parent/child relationship between signifigant other's child and ex, there will be communication between signifigant other and ex about wellbeing of said child[ren]
C. We will often disagree with decisions made between signifigant other and the ex. This is going to happen. How you handle it will be either something that will draw you closer, or drive a wedge between you that takes years (if ever) to remove.
It doesnt sound to me like she doesnt value your opinions, think for a moment...she had a daughter with him, but obviously she wants to be with you, or she wouldnt be there. The confusion comes in when she has to consider three opinons; hers, yours, and HIS. When it involves THEIR daughter, it's only right to hear what he has to say and consider it.
Let it slide, man...the lady at LEAST still likes you if ya got some.
dont kiss ass, but dont be a dick either, karma happens.

If some guy kept sticking his opposing opinion in about raising MY kids, he'd have one hell of a headache in the hospital one morning, about 3 weeks after I got done with him.
