View Full Version : Did I get the proportions right?

Take a look at these pictures and tell me if the location of the grille looks 'right'. It's kinda tough to visualize things without the quarters in place, but give it a go anyway.

The car in question is a '31 Chevy 5-winder. It is my most humble opinion that these cars have too long of a hoodline, due to the added length of a six-cylinder engine.

Well, this is a hot rod and I'm slicing and dicing, so why not slide the grille back to where it looks more proper, right? It's about 3" back from the factory location, but I should also point out that I'm using a '34 grille, which is visually "deeper" than the stocker.

So did I get it right?

Ed, did you ever decide what you were doing With the "bed"?

Are you using a MAS dropped axle?

Ed, looks great. Run some masking tape from the cowl to the grille just to check the possible hood line in case you ever decide to use a hood.

Sorry I haven't been in touch this week. Been swamped! I'll catch up with you soon and we'll get together. I've got to check out your progress on that beast. You put me to shame. I'm still wrestling with that cursed engine block!

Thanks for all the replies. Sometimes when you stare at something for too long, you get stuck in a box and need someone else to let you know that you're not a cracked idiot, doing everything possible to get it all wrong, and maybe, just maybe, you've know what's right all along.

Or maybe I'm just a cracked idiot who writes run-on sentences.

Definitely the later, maybe the former.

MBL -- Nice grille, man. I have a spare '32 commercial shell and I picked the '34 Chevy shell over it.

Plowboy -- Believe it or not, there's a 7" drop axle on the car. I should be able to get another 2-4" out of it with some spring trickery.

Slag -- Mark (Chopolds) is gonna help me stitch together all the rear panels. I have a feeling that between my flux-core welder and lack of experience, I'd make a real mess of the bodywork.

Jalopy43 -- SBC's rock. Kicking ass and taking names (and defining "traditional") since 1955.

Ditto Haring.

Also, roll it outside (if possible). Looking at it from across the street provides a much better perspective to see if the lines "line up".

Hey, you are using the same grille I have, too.

Yeah, it looks about right, but I do like the idea of rolling it outside as well.

Find some Fords that have the look and measure them and check yours, I know their not the same but the look is the look.--TV http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

You're preaching to the choir! I spent several hours making sure that the angle of the grille matched the angle of the firewall and the theoretical hoodline ran parallel to the frame rail. Having met me a few times, I'm suprised you haven't discovered how anal retentive I am.

Yeah but sometimes that will end up looking like the hood goes up hill. I think it is best to actually look at it.

I are an injunear, but sometimes measurements and angles lie. You just need to stand back and go with what looks right. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Not to say that yours looks wrong, just don't always rely on the numbers alone.

Looks good Ed..are you gonna put on the peices from where ya got back or whole quarters?

Here's the lowdown on the re-coupeification of my coupe:

Doubtless you all noticed the lack of sheetmetal behind the turret. Kinda hard to miss, no? Well, it took a little while to find all the missing parts.

The quarters came from Tuck. Being the stand-up guy he is, he and bobbleed went to junkyard not too far from Canada and nabbed me a set of well-preserved quarters.

The rumble seat lid, hinges, latch, and valence panel are repro.

Chopolds is going to help me put it all back together (hopefully soon!).

There ya have it.

Looks good, Ed, and sounds like you have the body thing handled. I was wondering if you might be heading in the direction of the unibody look of a "ute" when you were talking box. I think the coupe idea is the way to go. Take pictures!

AV8 -- The coupe came to me as a "ute". I have no documented history for the car, but the previous owner told me that he bought it from a farmer whose family turned it into a truck in the 40's using a Sears & Roebuck kit. The former pickup bed is sitting beside my garage waiting for me to do something with it. I have no plans for it, but I'd hate to scrap a piece of history like that.

If anyone reading this wants it (it would make a cool trailer with a little work), shoot me a PM and I'll see what I can do about getting it to you.
