I was looking for a motor to put into my T bucket. I was thinking of something other than the standard 350. I dont know about the 413 for sale, because it doesnt run. I found two local ford engines for sale. One is a 361 ford sb with a 4speed manual out of a 2 ton truck and the other is a big block 390 with a fordomatic behind it.
So is the 361 just a punched out 302 or is it different?
What about the 390 big block, is it any good and is the fordomatic a good transmission?

I think you mean 351 on that truck motor...but Ford also made a 360 that was an FE series motor like the 390. The 351 in a truck application is likely a Windsor, but there was also a 370 truck engine that was based on the 429/460 "lima series" engine family.
For a T-bucket, a 351 Windsor would be a solid choice...the 390 FE motor would be cool, but very heavy...hope you plan to use more than just a rectangular kit frame if you go big block!
The 302 is a great all around small block...and pretty light. Cheap to buy and reasonable to build, too...great choice for a budget bucket!

I think that 361 is an industrial series motor, for BIG trucks, 391 (I think) is its bigger brother... used from 1964-early 70's

The 361 is the HD version of the 360 FE used in pass vehicles. There was also a 391 HD version of the 390 FE - it has a steel crank.
There would be no mistaking a 361 for a small block! Physically, it is identical to any other FE 352/360/390/406/427/428 So Fat Hack prolly nailed it - more likely a 351.
I'm a big fan of the 351W, but a 390 would be plenty cool - and plenty heavy. Speed eqpt is readily available, if somewhat more expensive.

I would go with the 351W or a nice 302 or if you can get one a 289!
Remember a Ford in a Ford is a good thing!

Well the "361" the guy has is a smallblock, because its much smaller than the 390 he has. So the 361 is probably a 351w then? How do I tell if its really a 351w and not just a 302?
I heard the "361" run and it sounded pretty good to me, or at least real loud but without any odd noises.

A 302 intake is about 9" wide. A 351W has a taller deck height than a 302 therefore the "valley" is wider. I don't have a W intake to measure here but it is a lot wider than a 302. A tip about FE engines(360 390 etc) is the valve covers actually bolt to both the heads and the intake due to its massive width.
Good luck.

The 351w and the 302 have different firing orders (hopefully someone can tell you what they are). You can tell the difference that way provided no one has put a 302 camshaft in it (they are interchangeable) and changed the firing order to match.

Once again, here's the old 'trick'...
count the valve cover bolts per head.
5 = FE series (332,352,360,390,406,427,428)
6 = Windsor series (221,255,260,289,302,351W)
7 = Lima series (370 truck, 429,460)
8 = Cleveland/Modified series (351C or 351-400M)
Learned this one back in auto shop...easy and foolproof! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Another easy way to tell if it's a 351w is the intake bolts, if the are completly vertical it's a 351w if they are canted it's a 302. Also the firing order should be right on the intake if it's the stock one, but there are different firing orders for different years. And as I have learned over the last couple of weeks, the distributor for a 302 is different than on a 351(different hex on the oil pump drive)

The closest thing FoMoCo made to a 413 was the Merc 410. The 413 is a Mopar...

From memory -
221/260/289/302 (until '85 or so) - 15426378
351 (new 302) - 13726548
FWIW, you can mix & match cams, just be sure & "re-wire" your distributor to the correct firing order. 351W uses same cam as 302.
Ford changed from the 154 firing order in '69 with the 351W to reduce stress on the crank journal.
Trivia - The Ford 154 firing order is the same as Chevy - they just number the cylinders differently & "begin" 1 cylinder off - oh, and the distributors rotate opposite (Ford = CCW, Chevy = CW)
