View Full Version : Lazy Tach
I put in a set of S-W Wings using a Painless wiring kit. The tach responds very slowly to rpm changes. I've questioned both S-W & Painless but no response from either yet. I'd like to fix it over the 4th. Can anyone lend me some input on this? Thanks
yup i just fixed this the other nite.i just installed a nice set of wings gauges myself including the tach.On the back of the tach there is a rubber or plastic bung.Take out the bung and you will find some very small rocker switches numbered 1-4 i think any way at least number 3 and number four are up i think .I'm not doing very well am i ?anyway how i did it was sat with the car ticking over and moved the switches until i got the correct reading (literally seconds it took)make sure the tach responds as you would expect it too on your engine i.e make sure it dont go up too high and that tickover looks about right otherwise you may have it set on 4,5,6,7,or however many cylinders they can cope with.............Marq if you are running a v8 let me know if you are having difficulty and i will take mine back out of the dash and check the correct setting but it's real easy

I'm running a SW Deluxe tach that did the same thing. I spoke with their tech guy who told me the glyptol lubricant was the problem It was viscous enough to slow the needle but that with use it would get better. It eventually did but durring the winter when I first put it in it was a slug. Gotta say I'm not all that impressed with SW.
Thanks for the replys. I know that there are switches on the back of the speed-o to adjust the final drive ratios but didn't notice that on the tach. I'll check it out Saterday morning, Marq. Kerry, I hope that is not the way that thing was made to function. I am tolerant of a tach that works slugglish on my Harley but with all the viberation, damping is understandable. Thanks again

The SW Wings tachs are junk. I'm on my third one in my coupe. The older plastic housing ones are the worst. The first one (plastic housing) started reacting sluggishly, then it would never return to zero when off and finally it started reading too high. It's sitting on the shelf right now indicating over 4000 RPM's. The second one was a metal case one and it started reading sluggishly and too high after only a few weeks of use. I suspect welding on the car (with the battery disconnected) may have affected it. It's sitting on the shelf next to the plastic one indicating about 2000 RPM's. I'm now on the third one and it's still working OK at the moment.

Mine has never worked right. Same problems as everyone else has mentioned. What a POS.I'll try some of the tips posted to get it to read right. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

It matches the other gauges. I suspected the second's demise may have been partly my fault for welding on the car with the tach hooked up and I got the third one cheap.
i know someone who runs the shit outa his car and has done at least 20,000 miles with an sw gauge set wings type .He has had no trouble at all fit and forget deal and all is still well with the set so i suppose there may be a few rogue batches out there............Marq
