Marq, I've always hooked the cable to the carb linkage and set the trans to full open at wide open throttle. Whatever slack is in the cable as lesser throttle positions never seemed to matter. Infact, I have run and some of my friends have run 350 turbos with no cable. Just grab the shifter when you want second gear. Never seem to adversely affect trans life or operation (100,000 miles +). By the way, you've got a nice truck.
thanks for the info and nice words viper......Marq

I do the same, full out at full throttle.
On a turbo350 the cable is only for kick-down, the vacuum modulator controls the shifting. The turbo350 cable is not connected to a throttle control valve like a 700R4 or 200R4, those are critical to get set right.

I did not run one on my truck the first couple of years and did not have any problems. One day the guy that does my transmission work looked at my truck and told me to put the cable on and adjust it. He said that the kick down cable sets the pump pressure in the transmission and that without it installed the pressure would not be enough at critical times and the transmission would fail.

Somewhere around 71 or so some GMs used a cable that hooked directly from the trans to the gas pedal. I still have a few of them left if you need one. They have a neat little grommet that holds them in place too.Just bore a small hole in the firewall & they snap right in.DAVE
