so I got me this here new fancy wiring kit from Painless. It sure is a pretty looking thing. 18 circut universal harness.
every wire is printed on as to where it goes (left headlight / park light) and such. I also got with it a book on how to wire yer hot rod. Now I'll tell ya Im a body shop guy and a painter at that we dont like to get dirty or play with wires. have any of you put one of these things in a car???? Im looking at putting this unit in the "Roswell Rod" it'll be my first time, yes a wiring virgin i am. the book they gave me with the kit sucks if ya ask me. I need it to be laid out for the dumb ass that i am. the only odd thing i need to wire is the screw motor to lift the bubble top. so like i said any pros out there that can help a virgin like me. Thanks!

take your time , and follow the instructions..take one step at a time... wiring isn't real hard,it just seams overwelming at first if you have never done it....after you've done a couple it will be a piece of cake. .maybe you can find someone local who knows what he is doing to come over and give some guidance?

I've done several but perfer E-Z-Wiring kit. They have better instructions. First thing to do is read the complete pamphlet. Then lay out the harness on the floor. Re-read the book looking at the harness and your car. Then mount the fuse block. Run wires to appropiate places tying up the loom. NEVER cut a wire untill everything is in place. I generally do things in units starting with the motor compartment then the lights then under dash. Some of it overlaps. Just take your time, think about it a lot. After everything is pulled to proper places start at teh fuse block and tidy things up. Lastly cut and put terminals on the ends. You can DO it.

The trick, when your a beginner, is to physically lay out the harness beside the car on the floor with all the circuits reaching out in their proper directions.
As you can see by the directions (most of them anyway).
Each circuit...engine,headlights,tailights interior gages, auxiliaries, gages etc. are shown in groupings.
To start, take some masking tape and identify each group in bunches. Pay close attention to which wires go through the firewall...so you don't have to pull them back out.
As said before. Don't rush..take your time and do ONE STEP at a time. We're here when you get stuck>

I got my kit from Hot Rod Wires out of Texas,, it was the first wiring job I did other than hooking up a stereo, or occasionally splicing in a crispy break http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I got the 12 circuit and redid all the wiring in my 57 wagon. It really wasn't to bad. I had to call thier tech line a couple of times, but I was really amazed that I did it and the stuff still works!!!!
Give it a shot.. you'll be glad you did.

thanks for the input guys, first thing is. I didnt get an instution booklet with the kit. should i have? I got the general idea that the left headlight wire goes to the left head light, but when and where do ya put a light switch in the lenght of wire, ( im scratchin my head) I guess what im looking for is a book for the complete dumb ass that shows the wire starting at the fuse box going to spot "X" on a switch then coming from spot "Y" on the switch to the bulb etc.
if it helps anyone help me, LOL that sounds funny, I have a 64 Impala SS steering column, 1960 thunderbird tail light (no back up's) 4 head lights a set of 5 moon gauges.......pretty basic im guessing. Thanks again

Yes you should have received a layout booklet showing the circuit identification and lots of stuff.
It won't be like..hook up wire A to light B though.
The new harnesses are pretty easy though. You simply just hook up the wires to the proper places and its like majic.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

FRITZ, slide over to your local book store and pickup a copy of Skip Readio's book on how to wire your car. It can answer a lot of the "puzzles."

that's why when i test the wiring i don't hook it to the battery...i use a battery charger set a very low amps first to see if everything works and there are no problems

well I called the painless wiring people, (verry nice by the way) and ask'd 'em if i should have gotton a booklet of some sort and they said yup there should be one in the box. i told them there wasnt so they will send me one via U.S. Mail. Im gonna bet the book will clear stuff up for me. i always farmed this stuff out to guys that do it all the time. I figure with this goofy car no one would wanna even talk to me, LOL
so far as off the wall crap goes im the only guy on Long Island that is even doing it, Hell Mark Moriority is the only other guy I have meet that does it! Im a little antsy 'cause after the wiring i can start to prime and paint this thing, its been a long trip fer me. cant waite to get it done. I'll keep ya all posted and you do the same.

FWIW- I was thinking that the Painless kit had wires labeled "Headlight Switch" separate from "Left Headlight Low Beam". It's been a few years since I have done a Painless kit, so I MIGHT be wrong... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif That happens once in a while.... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
