I don't think anyone else has posted this, but I found it on Ebay. The price doesn't unreasonable but no bidders so far.

Man, I've always liked that car. And I liked that version better than the repaint with all those curly scallops goin' everywhere.
But then I'm biased toward purple chevys... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

That's a very fair price for that car. It'd cost that much just to do the body and paint. Hope a HAMB'er ponies up.

22 hours left and no bidders?!? When you look at the CRAP that they do bid on it sure makes you wonder where their heads are.

I'm about to bid. I need a daily driver, but if that thing goes for less than $15k I imagine itd be a pretty decent investment. Not sure how it is slipping through the cracks.... I wonder if I'm crazy enough to make it my daily...
Alarm, 350/350 combo, disk brake conversion. I drive 50 miles daily in rush hour traffic. That thing sure would be amazing to see daily on the freeway http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Might be kind of a shame to put it through such torture.... Would have to park it outside http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I figured Daign was going to buy it, so I didn't bid. I was considering it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
I would rank the original Grapevine up there in the top 5 custom cars of all time, both for looks and what it meant to the hobby.
I can't believe no one bought the clone at $13K. If you tried to find that grille alone, in that condition, you'd probably pay $1000.

The late Manuel Arteche, who built this car, died of cancer just a few years after he completed it (I think the car was done about 1997).
Manuel was a nice guy and a very skilled upholsterer; you might have seen his '41 Ford removeable hardtop before he did the Grapevine clone, or his '61 Buick HT that he did later. All three cars had really first-rate workmanship and style.
Too bad nobody stepped up. It was probably a very good buy.

The clone (on ebay) looks nice, but man it sits waay too high compared with the real thing.
Also; The Grapevine went through three configurations/paitjobs for Watson, -all inside a short period of time. The ebay one is a clone of the second stage, while the scalloped one is the third and last stage.
I have attached a pic of the first stage (no molded grilleopening and no Olds headlights yet)
I love that car in all 3 configurations.

I believe I read in TRJ that the original car wound up wrecked and thrown into a landfill back in the day.

Grapevine was a low car. Any lower and it would have been completely undriveable, and Watson knew it. I read somewhere that he got a ridiculous number of tickets and almost lost his license over it. That car would undriveable here because the roads are so uneven. The clone does look a little goofy sitting comparatively high, but I would address that with airbags.

If I read correctly he did loose his license, for life....?
Also ********UPDATE******** I emailed the guy that owns it and he said he wants 14,000 for the car..........So I assume it would'nt have mattered if only one Hamber bid on it, if he did'nt bid atleast a grand he would'nt have won it anyway. His no reserve auction was bull shit. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

the original wound up in a land fill in albany, oregon i believe i heard in the late 60's. the local clone in eugene (the 3rd stage) is a dead on clone. ive talked to the guy many of times about it. he did research on it for a long while before he built it, just to get it right. from the engine, to the exterior, to the interior, to the trunk. hes got a full foto album of the original car, with fotos he got from watson, former owners, etc. but the clone runs on no bags and he drives it every day. its his only car last time i talked to him...

the reason randy rhoades car sit's lower is because he has a nova front clip and manuel arteche doesn't. the reason i know is because randy is my best pal, and the car he used was my grandpa's old car. it was flat black when he had it

manuel just has the stock 50 chev front with airbags. when him and randy went to paso they oarked next to each other and he could'nt get it down lower. randy recalls"it was kinda embarissing, my car was already low and he could'nt even get close!"
