The term "bobber" refers to...? bobbed fender(s)? Is that it? What's the difference between bobber and chopper?

Nimrod
06-30-2004, 10:10 PM
I've always thought of bobbers as bikes with all the nonesentials striped away, and choppers as bikes with modified frame geometry (raked and stretched).

I'm w/ ya. Although, stuff gets weird when you're building from an aftermarket frame w/ rake built in. Oh well...call it what you want.

I have a '65 Chevy pickup that I am doing for a customer... last summer I was supposed to build the truck... but built the BFD instead... then I found myself mocking up and cutting up my bob'... and said "STOP THE INSANITY!!!"

So I put it up in the rafters... I get side tracked easily. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

So, when the truck is DONE... I'll get the bobber back out and start building.

Sam.

I like the beefy look of your Sporty. I like the big Dog squisher you got up front. I have an 82 Sturgis and installed a Wide Glide front with a 16" rear Sturgis rim on the front. Didnt like the narrow glide and 19" much. Love the look of yours.

here's an old shot of mine..
It was a bobber in the new mwxico area back in the 50's, my pops picked it up in the late 60's but never finished it, and my uncle had it in a crate which he used as a kitchen table for 15 years. Ive been collecting parts for several years. I am going to get it back on the road soon. not bad! 40 years in the making! haha

Of Course it depends on who you ask and what you think is a Bobber. Some think a factory rake bike with custom paint, is a Bobber, others think it's a bobberif it's Factory paint, minus front fender, brake, turn signal/horn'misc. trim and a lopped off back fender as a bobber.Others say it has to be pre-55 to be a Bobber with mod's mentioned above. But what ever you deem a bobber I think they all are cool, here are a couple of my personal ride I built over the past couple years, is it a Bobber ? its an 01 with heavy Motor mod's, chain drive conversion, no front brake/fender/turn signal's, suicide shift, internal throttle so the bars look like a Schwinn Stingray(no controls) pushing 100hp.So is it a bobber don't know is it fun Hell Yhea..(Going to a new owner tommorow, have to sell due to long recovery time from 4th back surgery....HHHHHMMMMMM what to build next?)

I'll buy that definition. Thats the way Ive always thought of it. shortened or "Bobbed" rear fender-hence the term bobber. Ive also heard "made in the US or one of our allies in WWII".. which includes british bikes etc. to be a true bobber.
The term is used pretty losely nowadays though...60's bikes, choppers being called bobbers, and jap bikes etc. I like em all too though.
