the facotry assist is hokey at best. i would check out these guys and use a whole new box and then a pump and mount much better

I'm not sure about later-model systems, but the system in my Chrysler... well, let me put it this way: the factory shop manual describes both the automatic transmission and the power steering in 100% detail with explanations on how every little bit works, and I understand the transmission BETTER than the power steering http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I guess it would depend on what would need to be rebuilt on it, but my general impression from the shop manual is that there are a lot of tiny snap rings, ball bearings, and things that require a hydraulic press that I just wouldn't want to mess with.

the chevy was a ram asisst and control valve and hose and such a mess ,yes you can put one one ,but again look at a new box and drag link and control arm ,you dont need to buy a new box you can salvage one, but the bracket and arm are needed i run this on my 60 belair same drivetrain and it steers and tracks on the road so nice!!http://www.borgeson.com/58-64-chevy-manual-power-steering-boxes-brackets.htm

When my 62 Impala wagon started to have power steering issues, I checked into doing the GM 605 steering box conversion, but it was a little pricey for me at the time. I ended up completely cleaning off all the components and figuring out what was actually leaking. After doing this, I went on www.parts123.com (http://www.parts123.com) and let them find me the best price on rebuilt components. I found a place that had rebuilt parts, for a few bucks more than most places wanted for the rebuild kits. After istalling the new parts, everything worked like a champ, and the leaks were gone. -Joe
