My brother (longroof64) and I were on our way home after the Pavilions Show tonight and the harmonic balancer decided to fly off again. I say again because a few weeks ago it flew off but there wasnt any damage to the crank so he banged on a new one.
I think the problem is that the first time it flew off, the head broke off of the bolt that you use to help screw the balancer on. We were under the impression that this bolt is just used to help pull the balancer on, so didn't worry about it and just smashed on the new balancer (it fits on tightly). Is it actually used to hold it (the balancer) on, and thats why it keeps coming off? If so, how are we going to get out this bolt with no head when its stuck way in there?

this is a SBC right? YES the bolt holds it on.how deep is it stuck in there? if it broke off flush you can try working it out with a small punch or chisel and a hammer.if that don't work you can try drilling a hole in it and using an "E-Z OUT".if that don't work you can try drilling bigger and bigger holes until you get near where the threads are,and then dig out the last bits with the punch and/or chisel and hammer you bought earlier.if that STILL don't work pull the fucking engine out and haul it to a machine shop and let them play with it for awhile...

Are you sure it even had a bolt? I've got a '65 283 and the crank isn't even drilled! Some SBC's were drilled and tapped other weren't.

Yup, no question it had a bolt... it's the original 327 that came with the car, and the first time this happened we looked into the crank with a flashlight and you can tell that something definitely broke off... *sigh*...
So where can we find this illustrious E-Z Out??

Go to your local hardware store and buy an E-Z Out. That should do it.
