View Full Version : We need a HAMBer help list, Like the NSRA fellow pages

I was thinking about this the other day, then I read the post about Atch's troubles. We should put together a list of HAMBers that can, and will, help out a fellow HAMBer when they're traveling. We could do up a list with name, address, and phone numbers, or just name, and phone number, that can be printed out. What do you think? Dean

I dont know if it`s a good idea to put it here for a whole world of pricks to see, but I think it`s a good idea.

Ryan has enough to do so someone would have to volunteer to take these names and numbers and put them on a list, then the list could be e-mailed to any legit HAMBer to be printed out at thier home.

I`m sorry this person cant be me, I have so much on my plate right now I`m about to puke!!

I have a ton going on too (who doesn't?), but I feel the need to contribute. I'll do it.

What all do we need on there? Names/aliases, addresses/locales, phone numbers. Anything else?

I think its agreat idea. You can put me on the list, but i can't help seting it up, i only know how to read the hamb & surf for porn on the computer!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Or for security, maybe Jimv http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif or someone could be the dispatcher,

the broken down HAMBer would call HAMB Central

and the dispatcher would call the nearest HAMBer on the Willing to Help List.

It is a good idea and a bad idea.

Good: In case you break down in the middle of nowhere.

Bad: A HAMBer mentions that he is going to a car show for the weekend, and a thief knows this from the internet and goes over the the farmhouse in the middle of nowhere and breaks into the barn and rips the guy off knowing that he will not be back til' Sunday night. I think that happened to one of the Texas guys a couple of years ago.

You could make your own HAMB pages on a 3X5 card. I have a ton of HAMBer's phone numbers in my cell phone & they are broke down by region and area on a couple of 3X5 card (the cards are small and easy to carry). Also, you can keep an eye on the board and see who post's alot (it is pretty easy to see who is alway's online) and what time the are on & write down there name and timeframe they are online and if you ever breakdown in the middle of somewhere call up that person and ask them to put out an "Alert" on the board of "HAMBer Down".

Just a few thoughts that I came up with after driving to the Salt in 01'.

I'll do it. It's a great idea Dean. I have my own HAMB help list that has over 100 HAMB folks names and numbers in case of me having trouble along the road. I won't include anyone on a list though unless they have sent the info for that purpose.

So here goes, if you send me your real name, screen name, address, phones (home, cell work), email address, and the closest intersecting highways. (example: I-275 and I96) I'll put you on a HAMB help list. If your names on the help list you get in return the completed list emailed back to you. I'll use the NSRA Fellow Pages as a guide and put our list together in alphabetical order by state.

Cut and paste the following into a PM or email to me and we'll get the ball rolling. I'll continue to gather info for the next month or so and send the mass email with the finished product the begining of AUG so folks can print it out and will have it to take on the road with them to the HAMB Drags.

That's a great idea Denise. If you're on the list, you get the list. I'm a pretty private guy with my info and even I think that is probably the best effort at security we're gonna get.

And I agree that we certainly don't need to throw another responsibility at Ryan as he does plenty for all of us.

I'll PM ya.

I sent my info....If you send your info make sure you want to help people. Twice I tried the NSRA fellow pages and both times got no help. One time was in Colorodo in the middle of nowhere my last bit of change. The guy said he put his name on the list just so he could talk to people but he couldn't help us. Couldn't even help us find a rollback. Had to wait for a cop to show up to get help. What an idiot!!

I've had the opposite experience as Clark. I've used the NSRA Fellow Pages many times and the guys have been right out to help or have given me directions to their place.

Once on my way to BTTF's in St Paul, MN from Detroit my alternator was going out. I called the first guy in the area, he said he'd be right out to get me, I said I could get Big Olds to him as he was still running. The guy was about 1 mile from where I was, I pulled up in his driveway, he determined I needed a new alternator, went in his garage pulled one off the shelf and in about 10 minutes replaced mine. I tried to pay him for it, wouldn't take any money, just said send his back to him once I got mine rebuilt. Once I got back home and had mine rebuilt, I swapped his out, made a batch of cookies and personally delivered both alternator and cookies to him and made a new friend to boot. I stopped at his place a couple of times after that just to say hi as I was passing close to his town. The last time I stoppped there him and his wife had sold the house and moved. Chatting with the new owner for a bit, he got a kick out of the story of how I met the folks that sold him the house.

On another note, it's not real important that you are a hot rod guru machanic or something. Sometimes all the person needs is a ride to the nearest parts store or something else as simple. On the way to the Hunnert Car Pileup last year we were in bumper to bumper traffic in a rual area for quite a while on I94 in the roadster. The plugs fouled out and basicly Roadstar just needed a ride to a parts store. I called a guy from the Fellow Pages and he said he'd be right out. In the meantime someone else stoppped and offered a ride so Rudy went with him. The guy from the fellow pages got there and hung out with me till not only Rudy got back, but waited while he got the Roadster running again THEN led us through the back roads, around the backup, then back to the highway. Very cool of him.

Point is, even if you think you might not be much help, you are the one that knows your area, has friends in the area that might be helpful, or sometimes just an extra set of hands to hold a flashlite is a big help. There is no reason everyone who reads this thread shouldn't be in HAMB helper pages.

I would also just like to say i had the opposite experience as Clark. Ive been going to street rod events for 16 years now and at 16 I could go on and on about stories about people that helped us through either the NSRA fellow pages or the NSRA itself.

I also think this HAMB pages is neat because everyone sort of knows each other on a more personal basis to some extent.

For the rest of the info, work is 281-226-4372.
I live in downtown Houston just feet from the intersection of I-45 and I-10.

I've got a truck, car trailer, welding equip, an engine hoist, a few tools, indoor wrenching area, nearby parts houses, probally have a spare runabout car, and most likely will have a shower and a spare couch available. No cooking facilities unless you consider a Foreman and a Microwave cooking.

FWIW, don't bother trying to knock over my place. It's a huge warehouse and the other artist-tennents love me (grin). This is Texas, and we do own guns.

Don't get me wrong I think the HAMBerger Helper will work. I only had one experiance with the fellow pages and it was not what I expected. I don't think it was an age thing. The guy I called was just lonely and wanted someone to talk to. He even told me that's why he put his name in there. I was just getting the point across if you put your name in be prepared to help the person that calls you. Hell just knowing a good tow truck, a good welder or good mechanic can be a great help.

I can't believe I missed this post. I was thinking this very thing the other day. My house is located very near I80 and I29. I went blowing past a guy towing a primered 50 Chevy PU. He slowed way down and pulled over. By the time I got home I felt guilty so I went back but he was gone. This really will be helpful if not abused - as noted above.

We won't allow anyone to abuse it. We're all friends here and if someone steps outta bounds and does something stupid with the list they will have to answer to a couple hundred folks that are on the list so far.

Just to clarify a couple of points, your email address won't be included in the info on the list. Your email is how you are going to get the list to print yourself. An email address on the road is not going to do you much good anyway. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Also, if your not comfortable with certain info being on the list, thats fine, just don't give it to me. Whatever you give will be included, nothing more, nothing less. I'll repeat, if you didn't send me your info via my PM or e-mail address, your info will not be included. I won't take info of HAMBers from my personal address book and include in this project.

For those that are in a position to help nationwide with parts, garages, and shops, I'll make sure that info is clear to everyone.

And, once again, if you send info to be included, you will get the completed HAMB Helper booklet, ready to print, via your email address. If you don't send info, you won't be getting the booklet.

Modernbeat reminded me of updates. Well, I guess if this runs smooth and folks find it helpfull I'd be willing to do an update in the spring for the 2005 cruzn season, then yearly from then on out.

Just a suggestion, and I don't know if it is possible or just a real pain in the ass, but will it be possible to break it down my State then City? I think it would make it alot easier to use if so, but certainly alot more of a bitch for you to compile, unless you use some kind of spreadsheet program for it.

Thanks so much for doing this, Denise.

hotrodladycrusr
06-30-2004, 02:49 PM
I've broken it down into States already and cities won't be that much more difficult to do. All alphabetical of course. Spread sheets not a bad idea....if only I knew how to set one up.....hint, hint http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I was planning on setting this up using half sheets of paper and "landscape" so it's small, like the little mags.

Deyomatic
06-30-2004, 04:28 PM
I don't even have a spreadsheet program, but I think it would be fairly easy,
Just set up the columns by whatever the category is, say column A would be State, then city, then the names and numbers etc. Then you could just sort alphabetically by column A then column B. Just keep your fingers crossed that there is enough room for it all to fit!

I DON'T think thats a cool way of doing it at all. Most folks here on the HAMB do not want their names, addresses and phone numbers available to just anyone on the internet. That was clearly expressed to me in lots of the emails and PM's. OUR list will be private and NOT available over the internet for the world to see.

JamesG
07-02-2004, 11:53 PM
So when your stuck on the side of the road with nothing but a cell phone, what do you do? Will there be a few contact person's who can stear you in the right direction? What if you can't get ahold of those people?

I think, and this is just my 2 cents of course, that you have a database the way AIRs does and then when you know your going on a road trip, you simply print out those folks info. I understand everones concern, but they have been doing it that way for a while now and have had zero problems. Once again, thats just how I feel about it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

Well to answer your first question, I don't believe there is one HAMB member here who would travel with only a cell phone, unless of course thats all you carry. We, as a group, are do it yourselvers, and pride ourselves on being able to fix our own hot rods. Yes, there are lots of breakdowns that can't be fized on the side of the road and that is where the "List" comes in handy. It's just ANOTHER tool in the toolbox, NOT the ONLY tool. I myself carry a complete tool box and spare belts, hoses, fuel pump, fuel filter, etc. I might not know how to fix the exact problem I'm having but I certainly feel I can call someone to either come help or walk me thru it.

Our list is exactly like the "AIRS" list EXCEPT it's not made public on the internet. You carry it just like the NSRA Fellow pages in your glovebox or toolbox or whereever you have room. You know when you get a phone call its a HAMB person that your coming out to help and not some strange person that got your name off the interent. OR it's a HAMB person COMING to help YOU and not some wierdo from the internet who just stuck his name and number on the list so folks call him when their broken down on the side of the road and helpless. Scary thought to call someone when your broke down and know your a sitting duck.

Also, as the broken down person, you can rest assured your calling a trusted friend, a HAMB friend, in time of need. Someone that will drop anything and everything to come help. You have no clue what some of these guys are saying in their notes to me. They don't want to give major intersections where they live cuz they say they will drive anywhere in their state to help out a fellow HAMBer in need.

The HAMB is a community like no other and most of us are very protective of said community and it members. Our list is not for public knowledge and I'm firm on that issue.

If you want to start a internet based list with your own gathered info by all means please do, I think alot of folks might be helped by that but please don't include my name and number on it. I'll travel where ever necessary to help a HAMB member out but I'm certainly not accepting phone calls from strangers in the middle of the nite to come help them on the side of a deserted road.... thats what AAA is for.

Do I sound alittle harsh? Maybe, but there are way too many weirdos in the world. I've met my fair share already and I really don't want to meet any others.

So when your stuck on the side of the road with nothing but a cell phone, what do you do?

Also, as the broken down person, you can rest assured your calling a trusted friend, a HAMB friend, in time of need. Someone that will drop anything and everything to come help. You have no clue what some of these guys are saying in their notes to me. I honestly did'mt mean to step on any toes here. Like I said before, you have a valide complaint when it comes to your info and weirdo's. Believe me, I know, I saw the pics he sent you............I think your idea is great and we should run with. With that said, please let me know if I can be of any help. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

No toes being stepped on at all, I just wanted you to realize that the way we're setting this list up is safe for all HAMB folks involved, or as safe aa humanly possible.

<font color="green">This is a great idea Denise!

I also agree with some anonimity.

God forbid some HAMBer get busted down in "The Gateway to Hell". http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Anyway, you had the slot for nearest intersection and I am moving so you can just put Tulsa.

I would drive quite a ways to help a HAMBer in need.

Thanks Denise.
I suggested this idea or a similar idea about a year ago.
I liked the idea of a US map with push pins of all the HAMBers.
So if you were traveling you could get an idea of who is where.
I`ll send you my info and will awlays be willing to help a fellow HAMBer
