View Full Version : Nason paint products, I bought 'em I hope they're good.
I plopped down $250 bucks for Nason urethane paints today. It's a whole 'nuther step up from $30 a gallon for lacquer back in '86. I guess Nason's the economy line of PPG. The gal at the counter of Finishmaster was way cool and exteremely helpful. She even threw in the flattener for free.
So what I've got is a gallon of clear, a gallon of primer surfacer and a gallon of purple paint and all the catalysts and shit. I've just got to buy the flake now.
I guess it's too late to ask if this paint's any good, but is it?
I'm itching to get my baby done.
BTW, my wife will be doing all the painting, she's a whiz with the spray gun.
'Nuther question, when cleaning your gun before the urethane shit sets, is it OK to use regular old lacquer thinner to clean your gear?
Thanks.

lacquer thinner is all we use to clean our guns with. Never seen anyone use anything else. Figure if that's how my teacher does it it must be alright.

The Nason will work fine. Laq. thinner is fine for clean up(we use a citrus based cleaner in our gun washers)
Spray some test panels, and try the flattener first. Some don't work worth a shit.
We want pictures of the lady shooting the paint!
laquer thinner is all that i use at work. what kind of base coat are you shooting on the top? i got my cheapo gun from my mac guy today and i'm gonna order the flake soon.
also i changed my mind on the colors for the car, i'm gonna three tone blue it. blue metalflake dash and white interior with blue piping.
in the mean time to satiate my hunger for green metalflake i'm gonna shoot my old honda and my helmet to match.

Just used Nason (Dupont brand) clear for the first time. Applied it over Chromabase basecoat...
Beautiful "Feel" to it as its applied. Not loose at all.
First time I've sprayed a car all over in 5 or 6 years. (health issues...WEAR protective gear when spraying HAMBers! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif ) huh?
Anywho...
Very happy with the product and I would use it again in an instant if I were planning to paint something...but I'm not....http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Sigh...darn SOLVENTS!!!
Bill
Does anyone know what a good clear is for metalflake or do they all act pretty similar.

That's what I'm using on my car. It's made by Dupont, working great so far, even for a rookie body man like me!

Nads, I used the Nason stuff, it is the budget brand for DuPont, and it worked well for me. I am about as rookie body man as you get and I had good results, so you should be happy with it.
FWIW, I thoght the clear laid down real nice and esentially no orange peel. I would definitely use Nason again.
I've used the Nason clear quite a bit. I really like the stuff...when applied properly, it rubs out nice and is pretty damn durable. I've sprayed some flake with it also with good results.
Hard to beat the stuff for the price, in my opinion.
Cool deal. I'm sorry I said PPG, because finishmaster's a Dupont dealer.
I'll post pics.

Is the flattener a liquid or powder? if it's a powder, check the label carefully for the words "Johnson & Johnson". My old bodyman friend just painted his hood flat black (dont ask) and he used baby powder as flattener, came out nice.

Nads...here are some mandatory items. I've been doing this stuff since 1975.
1. Plenty of air movement during painting.
2. If no air makeup suit available..then..
A. disposable paper "shoot suit"
B. rubber gloves
c. head sock
d. dispostable 3m charcoal respirator...Brand new when she starts to shoot.
e. all the bare skin covered....isocyanates can enter thru the pores and eye sockets.
It's really best to borrow or rent a booth, but I've done plenty out in the garage.(detatched)..I strongly advise not shooting in an attached garage. These chemicals are very bad health wise...chemical pneumonia, nervous problem, cancer, etc, etc, etc.
I've never met an OLD painter.

Just a word of advice about the laquer thinner for clean up. If you intend on sprying base color, then cleaning the gun with laquer thinner before spraying the clear, shoot a little reducer thru the gun or a good amoount of clear in a test area, especially if your using the standard quart size guns, the gravity feeds arent as bad, but with the pickup tube in the standard guns that entire tube will have left over laquer thinner in it and if it isnt removed entirely you will see beeaaauuuutiful blisters in your final clear!
Nason is a Dupont house brand, even packaged with the Dupont logo and I actually prefer it to the Chromabase especially the Nason 496/497 clears
hatch, thanks for your advice, I was really thinking to hell with it, a respirator's good enough, but you got me thinking. This painting lark's not worth dying over.
I really appreciate all your help guys, you're the best.

Nads...glad I might have inspired you to do the safe thing. Do you remember when Bhopal India had the big chemical factory explosion? They were making isocyanates and the people that weren't killed were blinded. Extreme case, but thats what these chemicals do. A few years ago I was diagnosed with MS...mainly because they couldn't figure out what what was causing my double vision, bad control of mucscles and other weird shit. I quit painting. A couple months later the symptoms left and never returned. Just be careful.
No kidding Glen? I wonder if it's the same shade?
Weird!!!!
