It may just be running on the battery. Disconnect a battery cable. If the engine dies, then you're not getting charge back to the battery. Could be the generator or regulator.
whats my next step??
cant just leave it alone, cuz eventually itll drain the battery down to where it wont start the car. right?

is the generator light on with the engine running or when it's not? i just went through this on mine. turned out to just need a set of brushes.
lights on when its running. pull pos or neg cable = quits running. emgine runs fine. like it did before the light came on.

take the cover off the regulater and give adjusting screws on the points in the regulater a half turn and check it to see if it starts charging...
and if its charging the light will go out..right?

yep look at the regulator , points could be stuck and burned maybe the return spring broke, the regulator cycles alot over the yrs,

not all regulators are adjustable.. the original ones were. I'd replace the reg and if that didn't work, rebuild the generator. It also would be wise to get an amp meter.
what would i need to do to change over to an alternator?

Get the alternator... I had too many problems with my reg and gen set up and said forget about it. You could either make an alt bracket or get one pretty cheap I think from Patrick's in AZ. The alt goes in the same spot, takes 1 wire, no reg, and is the best thing I did to mine!
Is your car still six volt? If it is, now would be the time to make the change...

Sorry about my post... I was thinking it was in an earlier year car. Patrick's should have what you need though... they got a bunch of stuff for 6's.
