V W stearing box question on topic

I do not know any thing about VWs. I have a lead on a locals estate who was in the vw repair busisness. He closed about 10 yrs ago . I need to know about the bus or commerical boxes that are used on hot rods. Are their more than one kind and does any one have a photo? What do I need to look out for? Any help would be appericated as I want to save what can be used. Thank You...

k9racer - I think they turn in such a way as to require the pitman arm to be pointing up. So it's best to get one for the opposite drive - in other words, over here, a LHD box would put the pitman arm down on a RHD car & vice-verse. Have I confused you yet?

So if an upward pointing pitman arm will work in your situation, grab one.

I have a 68-79 Bus box in my Roadster, and the pitman arm points down. About 2 1/2 turns lock to lock. I like it. Dean

One thing about VW boxes is that they're very light duty!!When I was building my T(which is very light) I wanted to use one and a "old salt" told me to shy away from them.
Try to use a steel corvair or a early econoline.

You can still buy them new, or rebuilt, from a place called Wolfgang Enterprises, in Redding, CA. I am reasonably certain that TRW makes a replacement box for them.
