Ok, still working on my first custom bike. I don't know how the whole tranny oiling system totally works, alls I know is that I got a primo belt drive setup and it comes with a plug for the mainshaft on the tranny, and there seems to be a return spigot on top of the tranny.
Anyone, anything special i should know?

A plug for the main, got any pics? Return spigot just might be the vent(on a 5 speed). The tranny is self contained and shouldn't need any lines or passages for it to work, just seal it off(ALL new seals)and run it. Primo makes nice kits, just read the directions instead of listen to me.

I don't think Harley has used primary oilers since the tin primary days, but I'm no expert. The closed primaries on late models use a separate primary chain oil in the primary - no oil from the engine oiling system. (unless they came with a dry clutch & then they use no oil, duh...)

So the question becomes - what tranny are you using out of what bike? What was the kit for?

But oil on primary belts is not a good idea...

Depending on what year your motor is, you could have a breather in the primary that brings an oil mist to the primary chain. This should be pluged.......by the way, I am on my second Primo belt in 24 years on my Knuckle, pretty good product......!!

Got it guy,
out of a few explainations, I'm running a n EVO with a 5 speed,
the spigot on the tranny has to be a breather vent.
I already flip the engine main seal during assembly to have the dry primary,

Another qustion would be is there a oil return line in the primary ( when using a wet primary) that connect back to the engine?
thanks for the help evryone

The short answer is NO.

5-spd EVO don't oil the primary with engine oil - they may vent there (mine doesn't that I recall) & even allow seepage (based on the seal), but the oil is separate.

Sounds like you got it covered.

I dunno so Im askin. I had an XLCH Sportster that had an "oiler" a small orifice tube that dribbled oil on the secondary chain at the drive sprocket, hence the "harleys always leak" myth. They don't leak they drip oil on purpose!
Well the question: Do the "big" Harleys with chain secondary have this oiler too?
And is it what that other plug is for?

harley stopped using eng oil in the primary in the 80's. back when i ran a shovelhead everybody plugged up their primaries and ran usually the harley primary oil or type f tranny fluid. just doesn't make sense putting clutch particles into the engine. alright that's my 2 cents.

DrJ............There is an adjustment screw on the oil pump of the older Big Twins that allows you to let oil drip on the rear chain, most everyone turns it off(too messy)....also the early Big Twins(tin primary covers)were to blame for the tail "all H.D.s leak" because engine oil(mist) was directed to the primary and collected in the bottom of the tin cover, when the bike was lifted off the sidestand oil would drain out a small hole in the cover on to the ground. Your Sportster on the other hand would take any extra oil im the primary and suck it into the motor and mix with the engine oil!
