Thanks Nate - that means a lot coming from you.

I just wish there was a better way for me to show off my handywork. Snapshots are dull and lack contrast. Plus the digital image appears to have wavy lines - when the piece is actually quite smooth.

Ohh well, I suppose every art piece posted here is astonishing in person, there really is nothing like seeing something live and in the flesh, so to speak.

This took me three months to put together - I only have a half hour a day (my lunch break) to do art work - see you in three more months ;)

Graphite and paper - roughly 11x17.

This is a customer piece. He wanted a wedge mopar and that certain text... and...well, I was in the mood for some comic book influences and this is how it turned out.

Okay, sorta an unusual post for me. I've been slammed at work so I haven't had much time to do a whole lot of work for fun. But occasionally there is some crossover of themes since I do a lot of work for the auto industry.

The Texas Auto show opens tomorrow and i have some work being displayed there in the Chevy booth and since I've been so inspired by these art thread and all the beautiful pin striping, I incorporated those themes into the Chevy Performance video.

I did some pin striping by hand which i had to transfer to the computer. These were the basic shapes I came up with:

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/keven_carter/friday%20art%20show/pinstriping.jpg

Here is a low resolution test video of the animated pin striping that you can see in Texas and hopefully an auto show near you in the future. These were used in conjunction with Chevy nameplates:

<embed width="448" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" wmode="transparent" src="http://i40.photobucket.com/player.swf?file=http://vid40.photobucket.com/albums/e249/keven_carter/pinstripe-2.flv"></embed>

Art or not, you be the judge. I just wanted to contribute something this week.

I took some work home with me and sat down with a marker and some white paper and drew these patterns on separate sheets of paper. I took them into work and scanned them and traced (and cleaned up a lot) them in vector form in Adobe Illustrator.

Tracing is probably a more appropiate term in this case. Then I brought the paths into an animation program and the rest is ani-magic!

Alright, here's a photo i took yesterday of the sedan:

I was leaving for lunch and saw this devil head leaning up against one of the buildings at The Brewery, so i had to take some photos with it.

I also finished my painting this week:

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/coop666/1439019034/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1178/1439019034_303614ff50_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="L1200463.JPG" /></a>

Coop, your work is just beyond incredible... I love the fact that your large-scale work keeps such a killer graphic style, and your texture is phenominal, as always.
I'm up to my ears in late-model (and *gasp* import-kinda stuff...).... I'll post a piece that's about a year old, as well as a more recent Camaro piece commissioned by a client... Great show so far everyone!

Thanks for the nice words from everyone.

I'm really happy that everyone digs the rougher, looser painting style that I'm trying to get into. I've been going in that direction because I think that computer apps like Illustrator and Photoshop are making art and graphics too slick and perfect, and a little inhuman-looking. There is a better connection made when you can see that imperfection and individuality in art that shows a human touch.

Needless to say, the same holds true for hot rods!

There is a better connection made when you can see that imperfection and individuality in art that shows a human touch.

It's a tough call on this that I've struggled with since I entered school for art. I was into painting and drawing long before the mouse was even conceived and i still draw and paint (when I have time). When I went to school for fine arts and traded in my brush for a mouse years ago, and now I'm feeling a little more comfortable with this tool set in a professional realm, but I go out of my way to not strive for total perfection in my computer aided work, but rather I try to work from photos I take and find ways to make my art more human even though some of it is being generated with the use of computers. It's just a different way of thinking I suppose. Some folks appreciate it, some don't.

I can say I’ve been a fan of your work since i saw the Lords of Acid cover and even with a computer I don’t know if I can achieve your perfection.

Why? If you know a better way to paint at that scale, I'd love to hear about it!

I've tried the grid method in the past, but it doesn't really work with the layered composition style that I'm working in now. I thought about doing the large graphic elements with silkscreens, like Andy Warhol, but I ultimately decided against it because I thought the image reproduction would be too perfect.

I learned a variation of the technique I use now when I was doing signpainting. After creating the sign image at a smaller scale, it was scaled up with the projector, and transferred to a paper template, then scored with one of those pounce wheel things, then the image was transferred on site using a pounce bag. this was the template that was used to paint the sign.

Just to clarify, I'm not anti-computer at all. (I compose these paintings in Photoshop, after all...) A computer is a tool, and like any tool, it can be used or abused. It's been a while for me as I've been putting together a new site/portfolio...

It's now up and running at http://www.misterpaterson.com

Got a rendering tutorial up now as a permanent feature, and heres one of my latest pieces. It's a combo of painting and rendering which was unusual for me. Basically it's a concept of a truck a guys building and rather than a computer rendering he asked if I could actually paint it, so here it is...

I'm posting some automotive illustrations
that are a bit off topic but as artists who appreciate
the skilled works of legendary image makers I think you'll
like these. Some of you may know who SYD MEAD is.
Mead has been a huge inspiration to me for over 30 years.
Some of his work will be familiar to you if you ever saw

Those are great Gary, thanks. I recently came across a bunch of 'like new' Nat'l Geographics from '66-'73. All the ones from '66- '69 have the wide-track Pontiac adds in them which sent me soaring. My son and I spent a day scanning, cleaning up a saving them. Yeah, baby!

Bumpstick... Jigger... glad I posted the Mead pictures.
Actually though, pictures number 2 and 3 were built.
Number 2 was known as the "Innovari", designed for and built by the United States Steel Corp. in Pittsburgh, Pa. I once saw it from the eighth floor of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1968. One of our classrooms overlooked a parking deck. On the roof of that deck sat the Innovari, a 1959 T-bird and a 1936 Ford Coupe... all manufactured with STAINLESS STEEL skins. Precursors to the Delorean... by 20 years!

The car in picture 3 was commissioned by a gentleman in Cleveland. Whoever built it didn't quite capture Mead's lines... although it looked good. I only recall ever seeing one photo of it.

Also, as any artist will tell you, when you are under deadline, all bets are off, and you will use whatever it takes to finish the job!

Coop666; I'm not putting you down or down or anything. Hey, I've even bought your books :).

I use projectors and computers, anything that gets the job done. It's just that I sometimes feel a bit silly when I'm in the process of tracing a large projected design that I've already done on a small scale: Doing the small scale design was all the fun and got the creative juices flowing, you know. That was the real "human touch". Slaving away at the large piece after that isn't much fun anymore. Wouldn't it be nice to do a nice big painting all freehand? I agree with you however that using a projector for paintings this large is the best option for your style of work.

COOP666 Painting looks really good. I agree that computers are taking a bit of that "raw feel" out of a lot of art work. I know that I am mostly using illustrator now and I find myself trying to replicate a distressed effect on my work. Buy anyways, the painting looks really good.

Don't worry, I wasn't insulted. but i was curious to know just what you meant.

I get what you're saying, and I agree to a certain extent. However, when I transfer a small image I've drawn to a large canvas, I always find myself making adjustments and changes along the way, as the change in scale will sometimes make images look a little screwy without that adjustment. Also the projector never gives a clean perfect image, so there is a lot of interprtation going on, especially when you are painting directly over the image, with no preliminary guides.

I love painting precisely because I've already made all the left-brain decisions by the time i get to the canvas, and I can go all right-brain and just dig on the application of paint and wrestling with the brush. It's a very zen thing, and kinda how I imagine pinstripers feel when they get into a groove throwing down those beautiful perfect lines.

Hey Coop - glad to see you using the signpainting techniques! I still use my projectors and perforate an occasional pattern although I usually project directly to the board. I got a single surface mirror (silvered on the outside so the image doesn't go through the glass layer twice) in the one projector that will blowup (enlarge) objects as large as quart bottles. The other projector has a flat-depth-of-field lens to minimize distortion but it isn't antistigmatic so the color bands are pretty noticable. Of course when working the size you do it helps to have plenty of space to back the projector up and a really dark studio.:D Another killer piece!

As far as using the computer to do your art, I leave that to people that can do it. I don't even want to start learning all that. I can see where I could use it, but it's not me. I would use a projector if it was something really big. I find that when you don't use guides and templates, you have to take a deep breath, have some steady nerves to get a ink line straight. Almost like pinstriping. Thats why I don't mind shakey lines sometimes, looks more human like you say. With that said, I marvel at computer art and how perfect it can be.
I personally draw everything by hand , and sometimes trace a drawing I already did. But I don't like too. It's like music and the first take or recording. It's usually the best because all the original energy ain't been sucked out yet. I will throw things in the pile if I can't improve on the original "energy".
Heres a bunch of one-offs, from the pile. Everything from nakid women to the amazing belt drive motorcycle powered modified!:D
A really good art show, I'm just sittin down to it......

I thought I'd chime in on this one. I do most of my work in Photoshop (but it's just the tool I'm most comfortable with) You still have to have the idea. I generally like to flesh out the idea in sketch form, scan it in and the use it as a roadmap and less of a template. The computer frees me up to take an idea in any direction I prefer. Trust me, there are still 'happy accidents'. This is where I started:

It's really cool to see where you started. I specially like since I work in the same way : a quick sketch on paper, and then Photoshop and it's "happy accidents" as you put it.
An "Art Tech" thread sounds really good!

This has alway been one of my favorite threads on the HAMB. How 'bout an "Art Tech Week"? -stick

That's neet-o Tingy! Welcome back!!!

Bumpstick, You ever done any of that there animatin'???

Customcory we work along the sme lines (Hey, a pun?) I don'tsoppose it shows in my stuff, tho, that I tend to prefer looose quick lines. I'll tend to clean up my old stuff a bit on photoshop only by adjusting the exposure as the scanner tends to tint out too much. I'll post some raw stuff.

Another great Art Friday! Kudos to everyone. Here are a couple of vintage tackle boxes I picked up last weekend. All I've done so far is lay down some outlines;not sure where I want to go with these yet.Been thinking about painting a,"PINSTRIPING BY ..."and leaving a space for the new owner to fill in his or her name along with some lettering.
One is steel and the other aluminum. The aluminum one has some small dents in the top and are a bear to get at the back of so I think I will leave them in for effect. The steel one is virtually dent-free and still has the factory cork liners in the trays. The guy I got them from supposedly has several more and is bringing them down this weekend.I can't wait.

This is the last thing I'm going to say this week.

Besides Janne and Surf Monkey - I need to also acknowledge that I was also hugely inspired by 1320Paul.

And for my next work I am looking really closely at Von Hartmann and Bumpstick.

Truely amazing work.

Von Hart - I can feel your pain brutha - hard to imagine haw cool those sketches look in person....digi pics have big limitations. Makes me feel a little better about how mine looks to everyone.

It'll be quite a while before I get to post another piece. I have two O/T drawing requests in the batters' box. I will be doing a couple tatoo flash pieces and an Eagle for a little kid who is getting his Ealge Scout badge or whatever.

I have never made a dime off my work, I usually do it for the fun of it (aka the fix mentioned above) - so it feels like doing a rail of coke when this art community gives me praise. Thanks to everyone who patted me on the back, you have no idea what it means to hear pros like you all to tell me I have done well.

Another terrific week everyone. It would be a ridiculous list if I wanted to comment on all the good stuff I see here, so I'll spare you form that....

Later!

Well I did another stencil this week. I only got 6 different prints out of it before it self destructed on me.
This was only a 2 stencil but I used different colors on each layer to get color blends. Hope you like them.
I was going to make myself a shirt from it but the stencils are toast.

Here are the others. There is one other red version that I did also.
On the darker sheets I used silver spray paint blending to the blue.

I dig your style of overlaying parts on the chick, I hope you dont mind if I borrow that style for some ink I am going to get, I have a chick that I am getting on my arm and thinking an injector of some sort layed over top of her would be cool. Thanks

Great pencil sketch gilty!

This is a painting i started a year and a half ago that i put away until just yesterday and finally finished it last night. It might a been because after getting my Econoline back recently, it motivated me to finish it.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/cabphotos/econopainting.jpg

It's an acrylic painting on a 11 X 14 canvas.

Great stuff this week everyone, this thread rocks!
until next thursday ...peace out.
