Howdy all. Tim here. I have a quick question on an engine code. A friend of mine has a 1956 Dodge...the engine code reads D633-67929. Does anyone know if that sounds right? The car has the push button tranny still which is functional. For some reason he feels that the engine may not be original...and may think it is a Chevy engine like a 283....but only because someone told him the #'s may indicate that. He couldn't tell by looking at it....and I haven't seen it yet. Do those #'s indicate a typical Dodge engine? If so what size does it refer to? Any thoughts on this would be great.
Thanks
Tim

Is that based on the engine code? If so cool! I don't even know what came in those cars...do you know what optional engines were available?
Thanks for the input!

i think D633 means 1956 Dodge 315.
there was also a 315 hemi but with different numbers http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
and a 270 poly

D63-3 is indeed a 315. The car model is the Custom Royal. Now the bad news, it is a one year only motor. As the next year it went up to 325 cu. in. If you ned any specs. let me know. I got the books baby. The hemi code is D-500.

WOW....I guess my mind is made up on which side of the "car guy" fence Ritchie is on.Yeah....A "D" code on an engine in a "D"odge usually means it's a chevy engine. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gifA 283???? For crying out loud, It has serrated valve covers on it!!!Push-button tranny.....ding! ding! ding! Dodge. You haven't seen it??? I have, and I do believe you were standing right there with me, since I didn't even know the guy.Thats when I told that clown that it was a dodge poli, but not the "newer style" 318, and that parts were a little scarce and not going to be very cheap.I guess I'm going to have to start regulatin' you like Nads does Justin! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The engine color is silver. Pullys and brackets black. The 315 was offered in cars in 56 and was also available in trucks in 57. 1958 was the first year for the plyhead 318. I have a 56 Custom Royal and 57 D-100. Both have 315 polys.

Do a search for the recent thread regarding polyhead motors or even better go to:

That site has a a great deal of information plus excellent links.

Seems to me they were painted silver. The only difference between the hemi & the polly is the head assembly, pistons & push rods. Use Tex Smith's hemi book or Doc Fromader's 315 build on Webrodder for doing the bottom end. Those scalloped valve covers are cool when chromed. You could also look for the hemi parts & convert it!
