View Full Version : 2004 National Hot Reunion - Bowling Green... Lotsa Pictures
Just got done uploading the pics I took at the Hot Rod Reunion this weekend in Bowling Green. Drove the shoebox out there and back...12 hrs each way. The car ran like a champ in both directions, with the only problem being a worn out brake pad that I decided I should change before we headed back.
Stopped in Memphis to eat last night then averaged about 90 mph through the entire state of Arkansas. Didn't do Graceland this time because we were ready to get back home.
The show was pretty awesome...I was really impressed with the drag car turn out. There were some very fast cars there....and the 'show in shine' was cool too.
This was the first time I got to experience one of the "Cacklefests" and it was neat. It's cool to see and hear those cars that you've only seen in old magazines on the track. I did get some video, but I don't have a place to host it, and I'm on dial up...so you'll just have to take my word for it... It was a sight to behold.
To all the HAMBers I met...it was great to meet you...and I hope I'll see most of you again at the Roundup next year.
Anyway, here are the pics...those of you on dial-up like me may want to go down to the store to get a sixer, because this may take a while to load. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
I'll start with a couple of my favorite snapshots from the weekend:

Great shots Bass...
I had no idea that you had such the "eye"...
Well, I guess that you have two of em' http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Do you mind if I do a little "period correct-ness" to a couple of your shots?
Speaking of period... It's nice to see you changed your pad while you were outta town... maybe you won't be so grumpy from now on.. FAG! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Most of those diggers just idled down the track from the finish line back to the start, but there were if you count every single run around a 100 passes the right way under full power, of front engine dragsters. I don't know the web site but there should be some serious coverage of all the on track action. It's not the NHRA site, they have a little.

A Cacklefest is where all the vintage drag cars idle together on the track, running gas, alcohol or N N N Nitro.
A Cracklefest is where Pig Fat is boiled. It might not seem so to many people, but the idea of chunky pieces of pig fat boiled in hot oil with spicy seasoning sounds downright yummy. Cracklins are best served hot, right out of the pot, and that's exactly what you'll find at the annual Cracklin' Festival in Port Barre, LA.
Could the next HRR be in Louisiana ala CAJON Nationals? We could have the best of both worlds Cacklefest and Cracklefest.

I forgot to say thanks to stealthcruiser for setting up the hotel room for me, thanks to Denise for the awesome chocolate chip cookie, thanks to jalopy43 for the HAMB sticker, thanks to bigron and earl scheib for the beers, thanks to Butt's uncle for making me laugh, thanks to my pops for riding out there with me and putting up with me all weekend....and thanks to all the HAMBers that I talked to for being so cool.
Nic32Vic, I took that pic on Friday...I'm not sure if the guy in the 409 won on Saturday or not.
This is the chick that primerispaint was referring to. I didn't get a good shot of her because it was too dark (I lightened the pic a bit)...but you get the idea. Looked pretty good from the stands...shades of Jungle Pam.

I was over by the staging lanes when she showed up and fully intended to get a GOOD pic......kept waitin for the right moment/angle, but they pulled the rail out and away she went. You shoulda heard the catcalls from the stands when she ran out to guide the driver back after his burnout http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Shades of Jungle Pam is RIGHT.....she was tougher than woodpecker lips!

Brian - I waited by your car when it was parked in front of the photo trailer, but you must have been watching the drags. Sorry I didn't get to meet you. Glad to have met some of you, however briefly, on Friday night, by the river, but regret that I was wasted and in bed early. We ran right on the index, but Todd (the owner/driver) redlighted in the fourth round on Sunday. If anyone has pics of this car I'd appreciate seeing them - my camera took a dump. Thanks,
Mutt

The "show" was AWESOME! I had an absolute blast hanging out with "old" HAMB friends and meeting new ones. It was mind boggling how many HAMB folks were in attendance. We had the perfect shady spot for ourselves which made it easy to hang out and get to know each other.
Bass, you posted some GREAT shots. It was nice to see you again. I'd like to thank Don (AndysDuece) for the extra people pass for the weekend. I also want to thank Chuck (StealthCruiser) for the extra people pass for Mongo and to Sodbuster's dad for the extra people pass for The Rodster. You guys sure saved some HAMB members some dough. I kind of felt like a clearhouse for get in free passes. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
A special thanks to my good buddy Mike (Earl Schieb) for allowing me to pick his brain regarding my color choices. I really value your opinion. Your a sweetheart. TY
Here's a few photos I took of some HAMB folks and their rides

Cool Bass...I knew you'd pull through. You have some incredible shots. I've got a couple of daytime shots of her but will have to wait until they're back from being developed. I've tried posting some shots on here but can only get two on and then I start getting error messages. I will have them all posted on fotki.com for anybody who is interested. Just type Butch Pate in the search engine and it will pull up my albums. The digital shots will be up by this weekend and the slides and regular photos will be scanned and up next weekend.
We missed the meet and greet due to some of the sorriest service ever at Smokey Bones restaurant, but did get to meet a few of you guys Saturday. Maybe next time things will work out better.

Did anyone notice the front end under this Chevy sedan?
It's an old VW kingpin type. That's one I've never seen before.

Thanks for posting the great pics. It was a pleasure meeting all of you and I can't wait for next year.
On a sadder note, on the way home from Bowling Green, we lost a fellow hotrodder. Dan Martin of Dayton, OH died Sunday morning due to a heart attack. He was driving home from Bowling Green on I-75 near Florence KY when he had the attack and wrecked his car into the retaining wall. He died at the hospital shortly after. He was driving a red 40 Ford Sedan.
I attended the funeral visitation last night in Dayton, OH with a few of my fellow club members. Although we did not know Dan personally, He was a fellow Hotrodder and part of the Hot Rod Family. He received the Best 40 Ford Award at our Rod Run earlier this year.
Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Great stuff Bass! Now I can just forget about downloading the shots I took, as you seem to have gotten everyone I had - and more. I especially appreciate your emphisis on the competition style cars.
It was great to meet a few more of the HAMB gang at BG. I actually did get by the area for a couple group photos around 2 PM Saturday (but Denise had the good sense not to post any of those! LOL).
Anyway, sorry didn't get back around to spend more time with the HAMBers, but myself and two others travelling with me (our whole group except my wife - who somehow wasn't affected) began to exhibit food-poisoning symptoms soon after that, and spent the most of the remaining NHRR time in bed. I drug myself back for the cacklefest Sat. nite, but was feeling like shit. By Sunday, it was all I could do to get out to the track and turn in our golf cart. Oh well, maybe that'll be a good excuse to make the HAMB drags again this year.
Thanks again for the killer photos.
