Ok, I am still haveing fuel gauge problems with my Desoto. When I rewired it and converted it to 12V I added the instrument voltage reducer but I still have an erratic gauge. It works for a second and then just bounces between full and empty. Here is what I have tried so far. New sending unit, grounded tank to battery, ran hot wire from battery to + side of voltage reducer, checked my voltage in (about 12), checked voltage out (between 6-9). What can it be? I need some help to solve this problem.

Surely somebody knows about this or have made somebody mad?

Just an idea but maybe you could rig a multimeter up on the input side of the guage & see whats going on as the guage fluctuates, sounds like you've covered most of the obvious.

I suck at wiring....

Could the regulator be introducing the pulsing? Give the thing a quick trial on straight 12. It won't give an accurate reading, but see if it steadies. You may need a different sort, perhaps solid state, of regulator.

switching fuel gauges over from 6volts to 12volts make them do strange things. The gauge reads the difference in ohms from the sender and over the years it is very possible for the "windings" in the gauge to become inacurate or not work at all because of the voltage/sender change. My personal findings on fuel gauges is to replace the old unit with a new one, especially if you replaced the sender with a 12volt unit. I know it sucks and it takes away from the originality of the dash, but I have found that to be the best solution. Probably not what you wanted to hear...It's not what I wanted to hear the first time either.
