View Full Version : a few misc questions
at the risk of sounding like a 24 yr old kid that is new to hot rods, i got a few questions. so shoot me.
why do they call a poncho a poncho?
why do they call a nailhead a nailhead?
and finally, how do guys get the big ass holes in their sunvisors. like the lake style cars. hole saw? something easier?
any other little bits of info i should know, tell me. like, why do florida people build hotrods?
haha

Poncho is derived from "Pontiac"...just like we call Fords "Henrys" and Mercurys "Mercs" and Chevrolets "Chevys"...just a slang type of nickname.
Nailhead refers to the valve in them early Buick heads. They look like, well...NAILS! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
I'm sure a holesaw is the weapon of choice for making Holey Visors...though these days a plasma cutter could probably be used as well.
If you're REALLY hardcore...you could trace your circles, then use a standard drill and bit to make a series of nearly connecting little holes just inside the perimeter of your traced line, then pop out the middle and file the edges into a smooth, round hole!
(That's how I did the hole in my firewall wehre the late model booster mounts now and the pushrod and boot go through!)

oooooh, i thought they meant rusty as nails, which is what i saw when i popped off the freeze plugs. haha
i didnt really think that was why, i figured it was the valves, but i couldnt justify why it would be nails, just because they go straight down.
everytime i hammer a nail, it looks like sbc valves...

I never really understood the holey visor thing, by cutting the holes in it, you lose the ability to block the sun, why not just remove it alltogether instead of making it less functional?
the reason i want to do it, is because it will give me a better chance of seeing stoplights. plus i like the looks of it.
unless i find a good quality stoplight mirror thingie, at which point, id probably still do it. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Does anyone actually know why those holes are put into the visors? I think it looks good, but I was just wondering if it's good for like 30hp or something. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
The stock visor really catches a lot of air underneath it at speed. It gets caught underneath the visor and buffets around. The holes actually clean up the flow of air by letting it escape.
