the way I think of it is, there are hundresd of other car builders that should get Billy Lane's space in that magazine. Jesus doesnt he get enough press in The Horse??? I mean he's talented and all, but he builds bikes.

So...you have not even seen the issue or read it and your already PMSing over it? You have no Idea what the article says and already crying like a bitch? It makes me sorry that I even bothered handing out those issues to people in Idaho. NEVER AGAIN.
Hey Mutley......Bo Huff has never heard of you either nor have I.....but that does not stop me from thinking what an asshole you are. Are you some kind of measuring stick of all things cool? WOW some tow truck driver from Fresno has never heard of it..well then, it must not be cool. I had no Idea you were Fresno's cultural expert!
Back in the day the Barris brothers were covered in nearley every little book. I wonder if as many people that complain on the HAMB would have complained back then about having to look at some bitchin rides.
I think some of you girls have nothing better in life to do than grab ass and complain. So now Billy Lane sucks huh? Have you ever met the guy? Have you ever spoken with him? He's one of the more down to earth fellas you could meet. Yeah I guess he's got no talent. I guess he's not allowed to be in a magazine that he works for. I guess he outta stick to Bikes and let the cool guys like you tell everyone else about cars.
Hey you hillbillies in ARK: Stop humpin' yer sisters.... an'lurn how ta spayell.
Every damm issue that comes out, some enlightened group thinking dolt on the HAMB has to complain and cry about it. I think some of you outta call Dr. Laura......maybe she will help with your issues. I convinced some of you wear your ignorance on your sleeve like it's a kind of badge of honor. What a shame.

dude, buick59, take it easy man. jeez, you sure are letting these guys get to you. You let the guys over a OSR's board get to you too. It should be very apparent that no matter what is done, someone will bitch about it.
Now, I'm not saying I dig everything that is contained in OSR but personally I think it is one of the better mags for traditional rods/customs readily available that is affordable. Although some of the butchered up rust buckets are just nauseatingly brutal to look at; I have found that is the case with most magazines, imo. I haven't seen issue #5 yet so I can not comment on it's contents. OSR unfortunately gave itself a reputation by running two consecutive issue's with Bo Huff vehicles in them and now the mag has been labeled. I didn't like it too much either, but I disliked the lack of a tech story much more. It's still a young mag and I do believe they have quite a bit on their hands, keeping that statement in mind I think they have done a fine job so far.
Not only that but if someone doesn't like the magazine they don't need to buy it or read it.

I know who Bo Huff is and have seen his cars. he does some nice work.
Just because Billy Lane works for the magazine or is your buddy or whatever doesnt automatically make him the king of all rat rods.
In the world of magazines, the deal is whatever is easiest and cheapest before deadline is usually what is done. So of course it is a hell of a lot easier to feature a car from a guy who works for the magazine no matter who he is.
If he's famous and can sell more magazines for you to a wider audience, hell yeah! ...it's about making money!
but you know that there are 50 guys on this board who can build cars better in their sleep... and that was my argument, not how cool anybody was... and to talk about grammar: OL SKOOL RODZ... gimme a fucking break...

You know its like this guys. Mike is a good guy he puts a lot of hard work into his job at OSR. He is getting a foot in the door & paid to do something he loves which is shoot photos of cars. Now who cares what Billy is doing and such. The issue with Bo, well do you really think Mike has anything to do with when they print an article. He shoots and sends them in. Maybe HE would have waited a few issues in between, maybe they should have or maybe not, what I think is unimportant. But it brings a guy down to always hear negative talk every time an issue comes out. Now that being said I know some of you are thinking he should be able to take the good with the bad, yes thats true, but a guy has to vent so be it. The mag is good, not the best but good, but its new & all things new need some fine tuning.

If some of you don't like seeing the folks mentioned earlier in OSR, then you had better stock up on Midol, because we might be in a future issue.
And we are damn glad that Buick59 is taking the time and effort to make that happen.....from our perspective, it is a much appreciated gesture.
Why hasn't anyone mentioned the fact that Mike's photography work is raising the bar as to the graphic content of the mag?

How about using your pull at the mag and have them loose their stupid "rat rod" cartoon "poster" spread and use some of your shots instead that I can pin up on the wall. Or have them let you shoot some pin up/car shots for that page. Anything but that worthless waste of space cartoon.

I like OSR. Yeah, it can be pretty cheesy, but that's part of it's charm. Sure there's usually some stuff in there that isn't interesting to me, but that's the same in any mag. The majority of the content has interesting cars and there are some good tech articles. I'll take a little cheese on top of that any day.
As for Billy Lane, the bikes he builds ar not really to my liking, but I do like his attitude toward building them. Plus, I met him in Vegas, he seemed like a nice enough guy.
As for Bo Huff, Muttley, if you never heard of him, it must be because you live under a rock in Fresno.
As for the WACKY PAKI centerfold, it looks like it's time for Nads to dust off the old "Cabana Boy" outfit. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

If it wasn't for OSR, I'd probably be lowriding my '37, its just more common with a 4 door. When I started reading that rag I knew what I wanted to build, a low buck rod, that I could have fun with, and show others that an old car isnt out of their reach. Like it was stated earlier, its still too early to be bashing a magazine thats only on their 5th issue. Anyone seen the 5th issue of Rod and Custom?, was it perfect? probably not. One thing for sure, atleast its not another ricer or wanna-be-HOTROD magazine. Speaking of HOTROD mag. they should get back to their roots alittle more, just my thought.

Why?? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif Thats all I gotta say, why?? But the whole issue looks good. I havent read it yet, only the article on my friends ( and fellow Hamber's Loudpedal & JobCorps) the Throttles of SLC.. Its a real good article and the photos Mike took were outstanding. Only one complaint where is my pic?? I was there Mike.. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif I see a corner of my car,he,he http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif Kuttys spread looks good as well, I have a special seat waiting for me at home to read it. Hey Muttley, if you paid attention to class and the Friday Art show you would know that Mike (aka buick59) is one hell of a photographer. He seems to be doing a great job getting Bo's talented work out in the world for all to see. He happens to freelance and OSR needs material.
Now, you have two choices, shut the fuck up or do something, like show us your writing and photography skills by digging up cool builders like Mike has done. I am not pissed at you at all but I would rather see 50 articles about guys like Bo Huff instead of the 80s,90s "mainstays" of rodding "journalism" Boyd and Alloway.

Yeah some dildo In Vegas took a picture of that MexiNegroPaki.....and can you believe they put his ugly ass mug in the mag!!!! Bythe way am I going to see you in North Carolina next weekend?
Maybe I was as jumpy as froglegs in a frying pan on my last post. I drove 6 hours home From Idaho, slept for a few hours went to work, then come home in the morning tired as can be..........and I read yet another bad mouthing of OSR. I've said it before.....there are cars that they feature that make me scratch my head and wonder. Like the gassers.........man I hate gassers.
The Last post/thread thas was on the HAMB was talking about how bad the photography and writing in that mag was. So I do have a bit of a chip on my shoulder and am defensive when it comes to baseless bad mouthing of my photo and writing stuff. Honest criticism is always welcomed by me. Shit it's the only way that I can see my work from other people eyes. I enjoy honest criticism....and take it well.....the flat out uninformed shit talk is the stuff that I have a hard time swallowing. I would venture to say that anyone here who had somebody talk shit about them or a good friend who they have known for years (Bo Huff)would stand up and make his voice heard.
With that said My apologies to the hillbillies in Ark. I love humpin hillbillies.....hell I used to live in Ark.
There have been plenty of HAMBERS in previous issues and in the current one....and future ones. Im amazed that only 5 issues into the magazine it seems that everyone thinks that all of them should have been covered already. Give it some time people! the staff members can only be in so many places at once. Ask Johnny Ace.....Im Texas bound in a few months.
About the title.....If it were me I would have chosen a different name. But it was not up to me. Just as Im sure many of the companies you work for don't do things your way.
What about "Kustom Kulture" or "Shot Rod" or "Karz" or any of the slang.....has anyone tried reading anybooks from Ed Roth? ya wanna talk about deliberate misspelling......oh lord.
Anyway NADS..Lets smoke some Kentucky Bluegrass this weekend.

Hooligan, where'd you find the new issue? Barnes and Noble or something?
-Taylor
The way I see it is this, once we were a united front against billet, now we're warring factions about what's cool and what's not.
That heap of a Chevy in the new OSR is part of the problem, that car is junk, the only reason it was built was to show how far you can go with minimal skills and beer goggles.
If you all remember, it was oneupmanship that killed the custom in the late '50s and early '60s.
Now we have a new form of the same thing, we've got goobers who are deliberately building junk just because they can.
What's the point?
I don't begrudge OSR for highlighting such creations, afterall the Modern Grecian got tons of press when it was built, and it too was two steps away from garbage, and built by Barris??????
Having said that I think OSR really is on the pulse of what's here and right now, but at the same time if I had the power that Chevy wouldn't get a chance from me.
But that's we we are right now, we've got the know it all illuminati and the people on the edge willing to build pieces of shit sharing one common ground.
I wish I could be a Rodney King about it and say "why can't we all get along' but I'm not, I'm just a nobody doing shit as I always have.
It's truly disconcerting to see a bunch of folks, who in another time, who would have gotten along fighting about nothing.
The truth is is that Chevy exists and if OSR wants to feature it that there's prerogative.
I, for one, am glad that OSR exists, I love Mike Harrington to death, he's my brother forever, and if OSR didn't exist y'all would create it anyway.
If you dumbasses can make anything better go for it.
PS Mike, I won't be in NC bro', I've got prior engagements, have a beer for me, just keep taking your beautiful photos and let the chips fall where they may.

Allbeit I am sort of a quiet person, I am all with 59 Buick. I have some nice cars, do my own work, yet wear Kenneth Cole and have highlited hair. I do not plegde allegence to the "greaser" flag, and to be honest most of the "greasers" I meet at shows that are avid readers of OSR are probably the biggest reason why I dont go to many shows. "Hey man...nice 303 Rocket...where did ya get that doublegrooved water pump pulley" OSR reader: "What? Oh, the water pump...kat...that cools the voodoo rockabilly block with crazy pimped out coolant daddy-o" There was some Baywatch lookin kat on the cover awhile back with some BEAT assed model A...or whatever it was. This thing was in 9 different colors primer, had a leaky 56 Y block, 3 different tires, exposed welds, crap for interior and it was a "done" car. Eh?? No comprende. That looked like a "before" shot. There are alot of people rescuing 24k original mile 4 drs out of grandmas garage, breaking some stuff and doing abhorent low quality bodywork to them to pass off a "rat rod".
I read the whole "I am a greaser" routine in one of the recent OSR mags and had to laugh...those were the same kats graduating high school with me in 97 with the punk rock hairdos and whatnot. I guess when ya outgrow punk, its rockabilly time. Who knows.
Also Bo Huff...he has had some really nice kustoms, but all in all I dont really dig his work, or Cecil Profitts for that matter. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I dont think squirting a lake pipe out of the cowl downward is a nice looking idea.
Trying to not step on toes...but I think OSR is really the quintessential "Hollywood" side of the scene...right down to the Olds article (52 Olds titled VoodooBillyKingPin...I cant make this stuff up) The article had probably 2 or 3 informative sentences on what was done to the car...including the "Pontiac 403"...a motor widespread in Pontiacs but an Olds casting. The rest was filler crap like "in a realm where ghouls drive hot rods and pimped out sleds" The day my chopped 50 Merc becomes "pimped out" I will burn it to the ground.
Keeping it fair but honest....

More often these "life choices" seem to be more economic than anything. That or walking and public transportation is more PUNK ROCK than having a nice car. I have a hard time believing a smoke spewing beat to hell '68 Valiant 4-door covered in stickers in anyones "dream car". Seen some pretty mixed up crap piles lately, but call it a "rat rod" and your an instant member of the "brotherhood". If ignorance and bliss ruled, your comment would make you king!!! Maybe you should think before you speak! What gives you the right to pass judgement on SLC, or anywhere for that matter? Have you ever lived here?
When I meet you, I will make a point NOT to shake your hand!!!! I am sure plenty of folks really appreciate your near-sightedness.. here or there!

Boyd used to call me Jimmy Dull. I guess I dont have the tough guy image. boy,it sure doesnt take much to tick off a bunch of you guys,eh? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gifanyways,i personally like ol skool rodz..i like the fact that they show things that real people build and not just chip foose and some guy with $$..i enjoy their style..it almost reminds me of CKDeluxe without as much enphassis on how everything cool was from so-cal..dont get me wrong, they make a ton of cool stuff, but if you ever saw an article about anything further east it was a special issue..with OSR it's spread out nice and even..some so-cal cars, some PA cars...doesnt matter.i rather enjoy a magazine that's a bunch of fun written by guys closer to my age who understand what my troubles might be and are willing to help out.as far as the trouble with the "new" greaser "scene" and the people in it and the attitude received, well, cant help you there.i've always been nice to people, especially like-minded people i share a common ground with.i'll sit and chat with the old timers as much as i'll shoot the shit with someone my age.why?because that's where you learn..if you've got a problem and you cant solve it on your own, find a 2nd or third person and get their view on it..they dont have to have a PHD or anything..sometimes the best answer could be something so simple.and guess what?you'll never know it because you didnt want to waste your time talking to the simpleton who came up with your answer.young or old, guys, assholes are everywhere.i've talked to guys twice my age who dont know anything and i've talked to guys half my age who dont know anything.everyone's got a problem with everyone..either the grey beards cuz some young punk with a wallet chain and some grease in his hair thinks he's cool or some young gun gets mad cuz on old fart told him his DAD has a nice car.get over it,grab your tool box and get back to work and maybe someone'll think it's cool, maybe someone'll think it's stupid.i've got a ton of magazine that i dont totally read because i only like half the cars in them.and there's nothing that says if a magazine sucks you have to buy it.i thought we were dealing with adults here?i'm not saying i'm better than anyone and i'm not up on some high horse thinkin i'm the new HAMB police or somethin.i'm just sayin how i feel about it.maybe some people are with me?maybe not.oh well.sorry to waste your time with such a long post!

[/ QUOTE ]
I know Chip Foose, he seems real to me. I also was raised around rodders that built national award winning vehicles -BY THEMSELVES- on LIMITED BUDGETS. Weak building skills and not a lot of money are no excuse to owning a horrible car. It's just very frustrating to people that have been around longer than six months to have slapped together and very poorly designed cars become the "underground hero". Because in my youth the hero was the guy that could build a car in his garage and win the America's Most Beautiful Roadster award-NOT just twist tie together some smoke belching piece of junk yard art that sits 3/4 of an inch of the ground and that you have to be some kind of yogi-master to fold yourself into.
Nothing wrong with loving that stuff, but don't make anything with shiny paint the enemy- right Rudy?

What worries me most of all..........And NOBODY has mentioned this yet. GQ magazine (yes that same magazine that sells designer shoelaces) was a VLV doing a photo shoot. They were using the cars and some sap all draped up in some fruity tooty "Teddyboyrockabillygreaserboy" get up. I wonder if he was holding a can of pabst with smudges of grease and a wrench hanging out of his pocket? Now you can hate OSR if ya like......but wait till GQ magazine starts in on this. Listen....I like old cars. Hobbled together, exposed weld, multicolor ones with duct tape and foam interiors, and I like clean, finished old customs also. Any magazine that shows me some of those cars and some of the car kulture is ok in my book. If you wanna go picking apart every magazine and every other thing related to cars that comes out because you have nothing else going on in your life then go right ahead.
There are a ton of people who are in the car "scene" that do great work that will never be recognised and there is some idiot that works across the street from another builder that will get a car noticed by someone going to the experienced builders shop and he'll get some coverage. It is what it is. Putting together a magazine is a hell of a lot of work and I for one enjoy it and look forward to every issue. For anyone that really complains, spend endless hours of your time and money and put together your own magazine so that other people can bitch about it.

I haven't seen #5 yet, but I think OSR does pretty well for a fledgling rag. People may bitch about coverage on Bo or other things seen in multiple issues, but usually these are the same people who won't lift a finger and send in an article or anything positive. I say if you know someone who builds a cool ride, take some pics write up a story and submit it. the editors will fine tune your story. I'm sure they don't have writers in every small town across america.

How about the straight axle coverage ... that's how I remember street machines when I was a little kid in the early '70s. Sure made my day to see the lineup of all those gassers. I'm getting a nosebleed just hinking about it.
I don't like everything I read in OSR but it's one of my favorite mags right now. If you don't care for the mag, try another title, there's a gazillion new magazines these days, nobody's forcing you to read OSR ... WWS

MAN! That puppy looks bloody awesome! Hope I can make it to the shop to check it out if'n I do get to B'ville. Hey, if ya see Bo, tell him his package is still here all ready to roll, all I gotta do is get offa my arse and get it to the post office. It's kinda grown from what it started as, but there's some stuff in there I know he'll appreciate and it'll fit his collection of other weird and kool stuff.
Mebbe, I need to hand deliver it? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Good lord carps, you've got some pent up energy up inside you dude. Are you sure you're not a hummingbird?
Lemme tell you something, I think Rodder's Journal is the pinnacle of automotive publications but I sat down to read it last night and it's full of mistakes.
In fact there's a disclaimer on the editorial page of an enormous spelling mistake from the previous issue.
Kudos to them for admitting fault but you're gonna have to repeat this for the next issue.
We all make mistakes, when OSR does it it's painful, but nowhere near as much as when Rodder's Journal does, because they are, and should be held to a higher standard.
In fact all of the magazines on the stands that generally cater to us have mistakes in them, feature cars withstanding.
There's no excuse for shoddy wordmanship, pay attention will you?
Hey Mike, that car above just made me pee.

I love "Ol Skool Rodz" They have put my punk ass 'lil brother up there on the cover with heavy hitters like JJ, Steve Bonge, & Bo Huff. Anybody bad mouthing a Magazine that would do that, and puts down my esteemed colleauge: Mr. James White, has no business here.

thats right, I forgot that Harpoon owned this place and has the right to tell everyone who stays and who goes.
Reality Check, It is just a magazine. You guys are acting like someone raped your dog and killed your wife. Most of you should be worried about the rusty hulk that hasnt moved from your driveway in two years then about an opinion that you dont like.
Jeeeez Get a life.
You might want to double-check that yourself...our OnionVille buddy went above and beyond the magazine rant to throw personal accusations at someone many people, obviously including myself, know and respect very well. Has nothing to do with any magazine anymore. And last I checked, the only rusty thing sitting in my drive is the fender off my Panhead--want it?

I'll take it , what's it look like ?
Shit...unless you like bobbed FL fenders that weigh 30 pounds (seriously) with a license/taillight bracket welded on underneath?

Yup, been absent for too long, and I need to get my post count back up, since it seems there's a competition and i like a competition. Hummingbird? Nah, more like a Kookaburra.
Which begs the question, if the Kookaburra is native to and only found in Australia, how come they are heard in the background of every Tarzan movie ever made? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

And I almost pissed my pants when I read how Alex Xydias was impotent! Didn't know TRJ worked that hard (no pun intended) for their stories!
Question: When does TWO articles constitute too much coverage of one man's working life in building kustoms?
Congrats Bo, on the ink. I was impressed with this guys stuff from the moment I saw Carps vid which he copied for me a coupla years back.
OSR: keep it up.
Peace out brothers!

Plan9.... you dont know a dam thing... or me so shut it... as far as slam chop goes ya i live at home with ma and pa.. the same ma and pa that you come over to thier house with your kids and wife and use thier pool.. so you dont have to use the kiddy pool you bought at wal-mart! if you wanna bring my mom and dad into this bring it fool.. you know where I live. as far as delusional money you owe me man... I fronted you $150 for a motor for the sedan you built and you want to "see if it worked" well it did so pay up!! as far as my hot rod goes im building it in my garage... im stepping it up and not building a shitbox or a "rat rod" thing like you build half ass outta more than used parts.and for pocket change... im sure your boss would be happy to know that when you were out on leave for a work related injury you were working on your hot rod all day? I mean come on there is guys in your own club that dont hang with you because they know you are a flake and dont pay on things....oh buy the way you can buy that motor from dana i dont need it...better have cash up front though! hey man what goes aroud comes around.......
