very nice. I tired to practice the other night and ended up putting the stuff away in frustration and anger because my lines looked like spaghetti all over the table and I was trying to make a straight line.

Can someone post a pict of the correct posture for holding a brush and how you drag your hand?

Very good balance for a first timer and the line consistency looks decent too.I would make one suggestion that might make it easier for you:
When you bring your lines together,don't make the angle so wide.You'll find that if you taper them off gradually(about a 10 degree angle or less)that they will blend together much more easily.Other than that it looks good!Keep that brush wet!

Sounds like you might be holding the brush upside down.
There is a top,and a bottom.They track much better right side up.

If your using a Mack Series 10,or Series 20,look closely how the hairs are attatched to the handle.
Notice how all the hairs are offset to one side?
That is the right side.
You'll probably see a small portion of the handle extending past the wrapped thread.
That is the left side.

Everyone holds the brush a little different.
Depends on the size of your hands and your range of movement.
Basically,if your trying to do long straight lines,the handle needs to be flatter relative to the surface your striping.If your doing tight turns,the handle needs to be more vertical.

Hey Bigdog, I know I'm late on this but that looks pretty darn cool to me.

My striping buddies told me practice is everything, so I'm practising and I think it's improving my stuff. Trouble is it's very addictive and like the second post says, everything around the hous should be afraid.

Keep up the good work and post some more as you go, I think there's plenty of guys here who'd like to see it.

NOt to hijack the post but thought it would be good to share instead of starting another. Here is my 2nd attempt after a long pause from practicing. Im trying to practice at least an hour each night. Damn it gets frustrating.

One question: When you do stripe, do you pull the brush where you want it to go. That seemed the easiest so far. Nevermind the squiggly lines too...almost like I have the chills or something. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Oh, when working on the other side of your work, what are some examples of stabilizing your arm, I do and I think, "whatever im doing just aint working" Its like im going through the motions and nothing is effectively working.

I've watched Barnett a couple of times (that's what made me want to try) and I noticed that to steady his hand he'd use the fingers not holding the brush and his other hand under the wrist of the hand holding the brush...seems to work good. I don't have any idea..I'm new to this......BTW I wish I could limit myself to an hour a night!!!!!!

Actually It took me a couple of hours to do that last night. You get going and dont realize the time passing.

I will have to try that technique by holding or supporting w/ other hand. I know if I had to do a hood; being that you can only stand on one side, i would be screwd and probably smear the work I already done.

I hold the brush w/ my thumb and middle finger using my other (2) fingers to drag to keep the brush height the same throughout.

I was originally taught to use 3 fingers to hold the brush,and the other 2 to support your hand.
Good luck.I found this to be very awkward,and unnatural.

I now use my thumb and index finger to hold the brush.The brush isn't that heavy,2 fingers are enough.
Now I have 3 fingers to support my hand.MUCH better.
That works for doing longer lines.

If your finger tips don't slide smoothly,
use a little baby powder just on the fingers touching the surface.

For real large curves,it's not necessary.

For tighter curves,twist the brush in the direction you want to go.
For real tight curves,twist it more than you thing you need,then twist it some more.
And keep twisting as you turn.

When and how much is a matter of experience,which comes from practice.
