just reply "if it was his I would". I got the same thing years ago - ignore them becuase they just don't know any better. Most only wrote checks to get the cars they have - oh but they do wash it themselves.
Just smile and walk away. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif You know what YOU have.

"tell your daughter thanks for the fun in the back seat"

Put downs and comebacks are great....

One of my favorites, used in your situation, would go somthing like this:

them: "tell yer daddy he's got a nice car"
me: " uhhhh, yeah.....do you happen to have a prybar?"
them: "yeah, why?"
me: "cause your gonna need it to pry my foot outta yer ass."

If they say, "no I don't have a prybar"
Then you say, "you better get one cause your gonna need it to pry my foot outta yer ass"

You can use that one in all sorts of situations.

You can also do a variation on that theme:

"Can I borrow your prybar?"
"why?"
"So I can pry YOUR head outta your ass"

Yea, but I bet they are nothing but ENVY when you tell them it is yours. Them old, rich, non-wrench turning jerks standing there thinking "I NEVER had anything like THAT at his age http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" Funny shit to see I am sure.

Hey, does your dad know how you are driving his car? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jeez, what happened to just politely, and proudly saying "It's mine--I built it myself!"
Sorry, but the fact of the matter is that 99 percent of the young kids out there today are driving pieces of shit or imports. No need to show your ass to people who are impressed by your car and didn't know they were talking to the 1-in-100 who actually doesn't fit in with the rest of his peers.
Yeah, being polite isn't as much fun as going against the grain, angst and all that persecuted by society bullshit, but it goes a helluva lot farther toward changing attitudes and opinions. And then, when they talk about you after you leave the parking lot (and they will), it'll be "Did you see that kid's ride?! I was talking to him and he did it himself!" instead of "Yeah, it's nice car, but the kid's an asshole."

Last year my Dad and I went to Goodguys in Columbus, OH. Though I've been going to Goodguys shows and NSRA nats for many years, it was the first time I drove my own car, my 28 Pontiac tub, to a large event. I was getting a pop out of the cooler in the back when a goldchainer comes up to my Dad and says "Nice car..." Just as I was getting out of the cooler to respond to him my Dad says " It is a nice car, but it ain't mine. Mine's in pieces at home. It's my son's, he bought it, he built it, he drives it. If you think its so nice, tell him (pointing)." The guy turned all red and was obviously embarrassed, and just started to walk away. I took a few quick strides next to him asked "What, now that it's MY car, it's not very nice? For your information I worked just as hard if not harder than most everyone in this place to get a car like that. If you're so shallow, that you can't give me the same compliment you tried to give to my Dad, you can take that compliment and shove it up your ass!" He scurried away with his tail between his legs....

One other time I got in an argument with some old guy (not to offend the older HAMBers) about whether or not my car is really a Pontiac or not. He thought it was a Model A. I pointed to the radiator shell where it plainly says "Pontiac" and motioned towards the Indian head radiator cap. He still argued. I took the registration out where it says 1928 Pontiac... he still didn't believe. He wanted to argue with me in the Meijer's parking lot on when Pontiac started. I finally asked him how old he was. He said "73." I told him "That put's my car 2 years older than you, so don't even talk like you were there to remember when Pontiac started."

Hell, just last night I went to the local cruise-in and was talking to an older guy with a Model A and a guy walks up and says "Why did you put a Corvette motor in that (motioning to my car)?" My car has a SBC with the aluminum (NOT BILLET!) Corvette valve covers. I replied "That's what makes it fun!" his guy then had the nads to say "What a waste of a good motor!" Temporarily dumbfounded, I said" First if you have to ask you wouldn't understand. Secondly, It is not a Corvette motor just because the valve cover says so, I am not keeping some guy from having a true numbers matching restored Vette. And finally, what do you drive?" He pointed at a piece of shit Nissan four door. I couldn't keep from laughing... The older gentleman with the Model A, I was talking to was crying he was laughing so hard.

And this one time, at band camp....

I think I will go to a large naional event this year and go up to every goldchainer I see and ask them how much it cost them to pay someone else to build their fake fiberglass car and how many pounds of billet they've got...

Brad, you're assuming that the original "compliment" is not a back-handed slight. If someone says, "tell your dad he has a nice car," it's obviously not a polite compliment but rather a sarcastic insult.

I agree that there are some intelligent and crafty ways to respond, but you have to at least first acknowledge that the person giving the "compliment" is clearly being an ass.

It's not alway's the 'line', but the delivery. Some old timer's are cool, some not. How many 18-30 yr.old's have real, old hot rod's compared to the sheeple that follow the trend's? A case of mistaken 'stereo type'. But, yes there are true 'asswipe's' that are verbal bully's.These guy's are miserable unless they are annoying someone. Imagine these clown's drinking too. Shoo 'em away. It's not easy. And enjoy the cool people that much more.

Elrod, Oldcarpilot, and myself were at a bar in Ft. Worth somewhere, and after the bar closed, we were all standing in close proximity to Elrod's stocker model A. Some drunk knuckle fuck comes over and says, "It's a shame that someone went and did THIS to a perfectly good car!" Well I had never heard such a blatantly rude comment about a man's car in my whole life, so I was shocked, but Elrod started asking him what was wrong with it. The guy realized it was his car so he started backpedaling really fast. Elrod just told him that it was your run of the mill stock Model A, probably an older restoration.
What an asshole.
