View Full Version : Is it just me or are we being over run with newbies?

Seems like just in the last week I have seen more newbies just bustin in with no intros - especially in the classified sections.

I have however seen some real nice intros done by some of the FNG's.

Nothing against them, but seems like lots of new posters here recently.

Probably just you.
The classifieds are for non-members, too... I think.

Plus I've been here since a week after the iMac came out... '99, '98 maybe? (I'm old, the years blur.)

Ya see, I go out to the garage and wrench a while and drink coffee and wrench and then need a "coffeee exchange break in the boys room so I pass by the puter and play a little, then go back to the garage and wrench some more.
Got the engine back in the Elky today.
Now tomorrow I have to figure out all them goofy angles on that weird-ass 2 piece driveshaft after I cut some coils outa the rear springs Cadillac put CV joints in their version of a 2 piece driveshaft in '63. Guess Chevy didn't rate.
And finish cutting up what's left of Burndup's "Custom" Volvo and haul it to the recycling center.

Steve
06-17-2004, 01:51 AM
yeah i stopped trying to catch rocky a long time ago a CV joint in a 2 piece drive shaft?? damn never seen that. have fun

DrJ
06-17-2004, 01:55 AM
It doesn't look like a FWD CV joint. It's a doubled up U joint contraption in a housing at both ends of the rear shaft. They used them on early Olds F85s too.

What say we drag this thread down several goofy-assed tangents?

Hows Ruby's diner cruise night doing?

There's pictures of them in 60's Motors repair manuals but they don't show them inside.
Picture a drive shaft thats only about 4-6" long with a U joint at each end, but the shaft is hollow and one U joint spider has a pin on it that fits in a rubber insulated hole in the other U joint spider so the unit stays relatively aligned. that makes it work like a in phase shaft but with two of them the pinion angles matching engine/trans angles don't matter any more.

That's OK Chuck, we all just take turns bitching sometimes. LOL

There is a certain pace to things here and when it changes or is disturbed various of us crotchity f**ks get torqued at various time and over various things. Some people's thing is new folks, mine is people tryin' to sell something to people before getting to know them (no offense, because you turned out to be a nice, fair guy), and I'm sure someone's pet peeve is ME. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif So it's all good in the end. It's a friendly board but it's even friendlier if people get started on the right foot. That's all.

Now someone hurry up and start a 'Big Daddy Eric Needs A '57 Olds' fund g#%&*@m it! Cuz I'm poor. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif And I guess while we're at it we should start Rashy an 'Elko Fund' so he'll shut up too. LOL

And they will also possibly spread more of the infection to young future rodders and keep saving more tin (even if its a given up on project in a garage), and more support against the tree hugger econo car hippies smash all old car fags.

It does get kinda disheartening with all the newbies, kinda like when you're at a party and you get all familiar with the folks but new ones keep showing up. Sometimes there's interesting new folks and then there are those who show up with their heads wrapped in aluminum foil and look like serial killers.
There's been a lot of the latter type lately.

DrJ has a mental problem.

I guess Im a newbie ....but Ive been around traditional Rods and customs for 22 years and followed Nostalgic rodding since 1976 (when I bought my first magazines at age 12 !!), long before it got popular again....Ive been responsible for building over 200 cars and personally owned about 50-ish period Rods , both glass and steel , flattie thro' smallblock etc etc etc.
Im a founder member of the English 'LOW FLYER' club , who were named as a major influence in kick starting the movement again in the U.S.

So what do you call a newbie with more experience than some of the HAMB veterans? !!!!

Too bad we don't have a way to track the number of
useful,interesting,relevant posts people make;
and compare that to the amount of off topic,
time wasting crap that is all too common for such a "Hard Core" crowd.

"24k Gold wheels on a Lime Green golf cart",
"I've got a pimple on my ass",
"Look at this ugly piece of Shit I found on E-bay",
etc..

I make a point of reading posts by some people.Like C9,Dr.J,AV8,among many others.
Not becasue they have alot of posts, but becasue the vast majority of their posts are intelligent, insightful, and generally educational.
These people are an asset to this group.

Then there are others who post Shit just to waste time during their miserable day.

Some of these Newbies might be able to make a valuable contribution around here,
while some of the regulars just take up space.

Seems like just in the last week I have seen more newbies just bustin in with no intros - especially in the classified sections.

[/ QUOTE ]
Man, if this is that important, maybe you need to log out for a few days and get a life!

[ QUOTE ]
I have however seen some real nice intros done by some of the FNG's.

[/ QUOTE ]
I never saw your intro! So who the phuck are you?

FWIW I arraived at the original HAMB a couple of weeks after it opened, have been a HAMBER ever since. But since I have a life, and can't spend every waking moment here, I haven't posted for a while, until last week, so I guess you probably think of me as a newbie too. So please let me do the polite thing and reintro myself. I'm Carps, a loudmouthed, opinionated Aussie prick with an ego as big as the sky. I live, breath, eat and sleep cars and have probably forgotten more about them than half the people here will ever know.

AMAZING... http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

All this talk about the large amount of FNG posters and not one post from a FNG in this whole group?

OK I'll be your whipping boy. Haze us if you will. Short time computer users dont mean short time Hot Rodders. I know plenty boys who spread the lead like no other but can't work a touch tone phone, let alone a computer. Touch tone phones came after phones you had to dial in a circle. (so you FNG's can understand) It's how most fads and trends go. You become part of a group of a select few because you share the same different view than the whole. But it's cool to be unique just like everyone else. Then every jumps on the band wagon. ITS CUZ CLASSIC CARS ARE SOME COOL SHIT. Viva La Olds!!!!! from San Clemente, CA

Hey Nads, I've never really been too far away, just not enough time to waste reading all the crap that gets posted here. You can often pick me up on the Friday Art show, heck, even posted some of my stuff since I picked up my first striping brush about six or seven weeks ago. I'm getting better at it and yesterday did my first flame job (on a car), which strangely I found harder than freehand striping.
