Sorry, but my Hollander's Interchange says no. The steering boxes are exclusive to each year. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
The steering box may in fact bolt in, but chances are the length of the column shaft will be off.

If your going to try it, just make sure to use the whole unit. steering box, column sleeve and steering wheel. You may have to use the pitman arm from the 56. sometimes the differences are the lock to lock ratio, or the splines on the shaft for the pitman arm. but if you have it handy and out of a donor car then try it.
Thanks I was asking for a friend who just got a 56 sedan delivery no colum or box. He has acess to a 57 set I told him I would go to the mountain and see what it said. Any other ideas?
Thanks Tiny

The answer is NO... you cannot just take it out and make it work by swapping it. but as you all know, with enough time and will, you can make anything work... but the best thing to do is just find another `56 box
A freind of mine adapted a '58 Edsel box in his '56 Ford. I'm not sure what all was involved, but I know it took some melon scratching and a bit of work.
Thanks I'll pass on the info
