View Full Version : Chopped the Top...Does it Look Right?

So I 'chopped (photochopped) the roof on my '49 Ford model over the weekend. Does it look right? I'm genuinely not sure. I brought the front and back out to meet the lower parts, basically stretching the roof. What do you guys think?

the rear pillars need to be layed down on a harder angle towards the "B" pillars to give a more streamlined look. It would give the rear window more of sloped, almost fast back sort of look. It looks a bit too "Checker Cab-ish" the way it sits now, imo.

Shoeboxer,
I think that you are heading down the wrong path somewhat. You might want to try another one this time putting a slight angle on the major portion of the roof and a nice gradual slope from the B piller to the sail panels. Lay the back window down toward the front and get you some teardrop styling in the quarter windows. I don't think that you want to add sections to the roof because that makes it look like a table top. Since it is a plastic model you might want to slant the B pillars forward too. The main thing that I would look for in a chop profile is the smooth slope toward the rear and a nice blend into the deck area.

Just my $0.02.

Keep at it bud,
Michael

Thanks guys...the nice part is that this is all being done in photoshop, so I can fiddle with it later today and see what happens.

By making the roof longer, you risk creating a flat spot.

I see. <nods> Yeah, now that I'm home from some errands, let me play with it and see what I come up with.

There we go. That's what I'm talkin'about! Nice slope to the deck area and slanted B posts.
Lets go for a putt.

Well, here's the result after about 30 minutes in Photoshop.

Better. First pic looks like you chopped it backwards, more in the front than the back.

Well, in the first pic I pulled the front forward and the back rearward, filling in the middle. I've since learned my lesson. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I think I still have an article that ran a few years back in Scale Auto Enthusiast magazine that went through step by step on how to chop a shoebox. If you want to check it out I can look for it and scan it and e-mail it to you.

That would be awesome! Don't know that I have the bravery to attempt it, but it'd be a good resource to have if I ever change my mind. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

That look's great. It seem's as though it's in motion. This is the look it need's.The dark color add's to the lower, meaner, leaner look.Wonder how it would look if the nose came down 2"? Forward look is the winner here.Good work.
