has anyone had experience with em? I picked it up for twenty bucks, to be paid if I can make it work...

I have never fooled with one of these things...how does the O/D hook up?

I cant seem to find much info online about it, perhaps I'm just looking in the wrong places..

uhm.....HELP....there, I said it.....

ok...after further disassembly, it is obvious some rust removal is in order...

it's gonna be a while before I get this bugger installed, so the waiting period when using molasses wouldnt be a problem, but if I wanted to clean the WHOLE thing, would any of the parts be harmed this way? I thought about using the electrolysis thing, but the possibilty of hydrogen embrittlement with the reverse electrolysis method concerns me, expecially with the gears...now, Im not gonna be doin full throttle burnouts or anything, but any chance of teeth breakin' off unexpectedly is an unwanted risk...

"Why dont you just buy another transmission???" I know someone is gonna ask that, lol....It seems here locally that people dont want to part with stuff...those that do want more than this out-of-work body man can afford...

anyone who has been here since 99 when I first came on board knows I am a junkyard scroungin feller...I just happen to have run into somethin that is kind of a new challenge for me...anyone besides this poor boy ever tried to make a chunk of rust formerly known as a transmission work once again???

I might have a Foxcraft floor shifter for that if you're interested I would let it go cheap.

Clean the whole tranny? Well, if there's any aluminum or pot metal in the tranny, it'll be eaten by the acid in the mollasses.
Are the gears and bearings rusty? The molasses will take away the rust but leave behind the pits that the rust caused. They'll be unusable.
If you simply want to clean off the 90 weight, molasses isn't your answer.. cleaning solvent is.

I used the solvent...got all the 90 wt. out, and yep...two of the gears are pitted, the little one just on the inside of the front bearing looked the worst, but cleaned up with very few pits, the cluster gear and idler gear are perfect, the REAL bad one is the big one on the barrel (2/3, i believe),just enough to break somethin the first time I get on it....I dont think drivin with that balloon foot you told me about would help here http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif I shoulda listened to ya when I first bought this car, Rocky......then I wouldnt be goin thru this right now, im surprised the original tranny held together all this time with no second gear...

I havent taken the o/d completely apart just yet, I did take the bolts out and pulled it far enough apart to see that it wasnt rusty like inside the front...

I am definately gonna need new bearings, I found a source online, but they dont sell the rebuild kit for the one with the overdrive http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

what I have for sure right now is a trans in good shape other than two gears....same problem as what I'm runnin....

I got the 58 bellhousing that takes the later GM tranny, and fits behind my beloved (until the gas crunch is over) 316, I guess my search will go on for another trans, or at least the gears for this one to replace the bad ones....I just really wanna O/D...I'm a sucker for punishment...

(added when editing this reply):
I found a parts source! It doesnt look like anyone else here needs this info right now, but someone may be able to use it in the future, M&R Racing equipment (http://www.mrracingequipment.com/M&R%20Racing%20Equipment%20-%20Transmission%20Parts.htm) has new and used parts for saginaws, and muncies...they build trannies for oval/dirt track racers, so they should have some good stuff...

I'm not familiar with the Muncie 3 speed and wasn't even aware they had a muncie 3 speed, overdrive transmission. I'm assuming they bought the O.D. from Borg Warner, who suppies overdrives for about 99% of the tranny manufacturers.
Too bad it isn't a common-as-houseflys saginaw 3 speed tranny. You could bolt the overdrive behind a common vega, saginaw 4 speed tranny, giving you 8 speeds forward...
