Will a flywheel from a 364 bolt to a 401?

I know the bell is the same, but is the flange on the crank the same?

NO the 401 has a smaller crank hub than the 364. You can turn the center on the 401 to fit the 364. I have an aluminum 364 I would trade for a 401 if you like.

401's from 1959 to 1963 WILL INTERCHANGE. 64-66 will require machining to enlarge the center hole. Switched from Dynaflow to the ST400 in 64, the pilot hole in the crank was smaller, that's why the machining is necessary.

Duh, re-read your post. The 364 flywheel will bolt up to the 401's just fine. Make sure you line up the little hole in the flywheel with the dimple on the crank. If you don't, it'll be out of balance and that's not a good thing.

Wait, I'm confused now.

I have a flywheel from a 1957 364, and I have a 1964 401 with the ST 400.

Can I bolt the 1957 Flywheel to the 1964 motor? Or do I need to find a pre 1963 motor?

Read your post wrong. I thought you wanted to put a 401 flywheel on a 364. I read it backwards.

You can bolt your 57 flywheel up to the 64 motor just fine. As I mentioned before, there's a small hole in the flywheel that needs to be lined up with a dimple in the crank, otherwise it'll be off balance and vibrate itself to death.

The balance is different between the 364 and the 401 so unless you plan on rebalancing the point is moot,

I believe that nailheads are externally balanced. I'm pretty sure the flywheel will bolt up, but you'll have to have the rotating assembly re-balanced.

The 57 flywheel will work on the 401 but you will need to have an adapter ring machined to fit the 64 401 crank hub. If not it will vibrate since the bolts will not center it. I have the same set-up on my car now. But as was posted before you need to line up the locating hole.

I found another 61 lesabre up here that I am thinking about buying for my other four door,its complete,the guy says the motor did run,but not now,auto trans,I mainly wanted the body and trim,He wants 300 for the car.about a 1-1/2 hour haul for me.I dont know if your interested in that 364 or not,I would deal it as I have two now.Patrick..

Poston's (Buick parts guys) have a 401 flywheel avialible. they have a company in California that machines one and ships it to you directly. It is I think a little over two bills but you can run that up pretty quick modifying things that you buy, or picking up a differnt motor. rodshop

Ray (ironhunter) has (or had) one of the hot 364's (300 horse 4 barrel) out of a 57 roadmaster or something.

I was talking about buying it at one time, but now I'm buried in other shit. He's probably still got it sitting around & would make you a deal (especially if you told him what it would be used for). You should get in touch with him, he's a solid dude. And he can answer just about any nailhead question you could possibly have.
