I just scored a early SBC and powerglide from the shop. It has the early style front motor mounts and front oil tube, how can I tell if its a 265 or a 283? Is there a way? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

check the casting numbers on the back of the block on the bell housing flange, and the casting munbers on the heads
this should help:

the 265 will NOT have a place for an oil filter to go in to it, the boss isnt even machined into the block, the 283 will have a place for an oil canister or spin on filter IF it has the adaptor on it....joe
Actually the '55 265 didn't have the oil filter boss in the casting. The '56 and '57 did. (See Mortec list..)
If it's a '55, sell it to a "Numbers match" '55 restorer for $$$$$
And this thread will go away as soon as it's got all the correct answers because there's no reason for further discussion.
